Halifax

Halifax is one of the stops on a future Princess cruise. A friend told me that within walking distance of the pier is a cemetery where 100 or more passengers from the Titanic are buried. Has anyone been there? Is it really within walking distance? My friend is very fit so walking distance to her may not be the same as for us.

I don't know about that but there is a maritime museum about a 15 min. walk that has a Titanic display with some items salvaged from it.

The cemetery is not within walking distance although the Citadel is. The cemetery is up on a hill and I found it a very emotional experience. The graves are placed in the shape of a bow of a ship. There is I believe a smaller Jewish cemetery where if I remember correctly the graves of at least two well know Jewish victims are. As I mentioned the Citadel up up on a hill and well worth the walk there as at noon when there is a changing of the guard and the shooting of a cannon. The Maritime Museum is very close to the cruise terminal. Halifax is one of the loveliest places, the meandering walk along the waterfront with the artists, a few restaurants and the musicians playing. It is a lively colorful college town and is one of our favorite ports. One one of our trips there several years ago one of the Bagpipers from the Citadel came down and played and there was also a local dance troupe dancing the typical dancing from that area. As you leave the ship at the time in the terminal many shopkeepers and information booths.. Enjoy...Oh yes.. Peggys Cove..very touristy and very often because of the fog nothing can be seen. Is the ship stopping in Boston.. if it is, as a Bostonian I'll be delighted to help you.

Thanks for your responses. No, not stopping Boston. When we leave Halifax, we go directly to NY for flight home.

Halifax is a very easy, tourist friendly city. You can walk to the Citadel and the downtown area is right near the port and is very friendly, walking is the best way to shop and get to restaurants. You can walk to the cemetery, but it would be a long walk for the average person. Get a cab and walk back, or vice versa. Halifax is a lovely city and Canadians are wonderful, warm people.

If you get the chance, take a tour out to Peggy's Cove to see the Maritime coastline. It is stunning and Peggy's Cove is a darling little town.

Best Regards,
Julia

juliae_mei-You make it sound like a really nice town to visit. I'm getting anxious to make its acquaintance, but it's still 459 days before we set sail.

If you have the opportunity, go to Lunenburg. It is a very maritime place. A little further than Peggy's cove, but much more to do. Alittlr further down the road is Blue Rocks, where you can often see several artists at work. But Halifax is one of my favorite cities, along with Vancouver and Pittsburgh - all are very attractive and easy to get around. Halifax has an interesting history. In the narrow neck between the two harbors a freighter loaded with ammunition for WWI blew up. Thousands died and the destruction was like a atom bomb. The laritime museum has a lot of info about it.

I just want to tell everyone how much I appreciate all the info. I never knew there was so much to do and see in Halifax. I think we may have to make a return trip after the cruise to experience it to the fullest.
