Greece -Shore & Land Excursions
My husband & I will be going on a crusie to Greec in mid June. We are trying to decide whether we book the expensive shore excursions fron RCL or hire taxis or use local transit to tour ourselves. Are the local taxis reliable to return us to the ship on time and would they be more economical than paying for shore excursions averaging $75-95 pp.
Athens shore excursion-is the Plaka also know as the pedestrian zone ?
Katakolon-does anyone recommend hiring a local taxi on this island to tour?
Corfu-we are undecided if we should choose the coastal walking tour that takes us from one small bay to the next passing through picturesque villages or the tour visiting the cultual & historical sites. Any suggestions as to what is must to see?

The Plaka is just for pedestrians, so maybe it is referred to as the pedestrian zone.
We found Corfu very easy to tour on our own. We followed a self-guided historical walking tour, and took the open sided bus that looks like a train to see some of the slightly outlying areas. I think that cost about 4 Euro, and was interesting, as well as being a nice break for our feet.

Are you staying at a hotel in Athens prior to the cruise or staying on the ship? If the latter, ships dock at Pireaus, which is quite a distance from Athens. In that case, I would recommend you take local transportation to central Athens, from which it is easy to walk from tourist spot to tourist spot for most attractions. Much to see there, however, so give yourself plenty of time.

Which date are you leaving for your cruise? My husband, parents and I are going on the same cruise (starting in Venice - going through Greece and Croatia) with Royal Caribbean. We leave on June 30. We have arranged for a taxi tour in Athens with Spiros. We have a 12 seat mini-bus reserved and have extra room if you are interested. Let me know!
