Glacier Landing
 

We have booked a glacier landing with Coastal in Juneau. Now , I am having second thoughts about it. My concern is not the helicopter, but walking around on the glacier. I had a serious injury to my right hand and cannot afford to fall on it or break it. On the other hand, I do not limit myself in any way. So, my question is how slippery is it to walk around? Is there any traction, or is the glacier smooth? Did anyone have a problem walking around on one?

Any insite to the navigation situation would be helpful so I can decide whether to go or not on this experience.

I did this a few years ago and was given boots by the tour operator. I really don't remember having any issues as far as slipping. I remember feeling much more secure on the glacier than walking around in snow/ice in NJ. Hope you have a great trip!

When we took this tour last year we were issued boots and a parka to wear. Not at all slippery. You don't walk that much, just around as they explain the depth of ice, etc. Very interesting. Actually the helicopter drops you off and picks up the last group which is ready to leave and so forth. Out and back. It doesn't wait around. The ice isn't real hard on top as its sunny when you're there. We didn't slip at all. Fabulous helicopter ride too. It took our breath away as we passed over cliffs. Liz

Will you be traveling with anyone. sometimes just a hand will be more than enough assistance. But the glaciers are not glare ice, more like concrete. You may want to see if your hardwear store has "creepers" if you live in the snow belts?? This would give you all the extra security you would need for your trip.

Got it, I didnt know what to expect about the surface of the glaicer- but I am really pretty sure footed- but it is riskier for me if I fell than someone else. Sounds very manageable.
I didnt realize the helicpoter left, I thought they were just there with you.
So, I do need to decide whether to go with my group.

Again for clairfication- ERA is the only company that drops off and leaves. Coastal and TEMSCO do not.

Thanks again Budget Queen- we did exactly what you told me to do, we booked thru Capt. Larry to whalewatch first and fly second. He booked Coastal, so you are tell ing me that Coastal does stay on the glacier with you; ergo, if I felt it was too risky, I could go back to the helicopter?

I've flown with Coastal 3 times they always stayed. Verify this directly with them for current information.
