from port to train - venice?

does anyone know what is the best (and fastest) way to get from the port Marittima to the Santa Lucia train station?
i have read some reports that talk about taking the Vaporetto (#82), but i think that only leaves from San Marco Square, and not the port.
any suggestions?

We were advised on one of the boards to take a taxi from the port to "Mestre" station. I guess that you will be leaving the Venice area for other parts of Italy. We did it that way on both legs of our trip. It was a wonderful way to go. Where are you going from Venice?

We are going up to Stresa in the Italian Lakes area.
The Mestre station is the one that is outside of Venice. We are going from the Santa Lucia station, which while it looks really close on the maps, we have been advised NOT to walk the 15 minutes (I guess the area is not great). And, unfortunately, it is not accessible by taxi.

My wife and I are arriving at the port of San Basilio,Venice ex Oceania's Insignia, and were wondering how to get to Santa Lucia station. We have booked online through Transitalia on the 10.35am Eurostar to Rome. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

The Santa Lucia train station is at the end of the line. All trains going to or from Venice must pass through Mestre. It is almost impossible to go from the ship to the Venice station because of your luggage. You must cross over numerous bridges. The taxi to Mestre will take about 20 minutes and can carry 4 people and luggage. Most are small station wagons. The cost is about 25-30 Euros. But your train ticket from Mestre to your destination will be slightly cheaper and you may have more trains to choose from since they don't all go to Venice.
