You will likely get some help here -- but a lot more people will see/respond to your question if you re-post on the Europe board. Lots and LOTS of Italy experts post there

The train station is very close to the dock. Recent port renovation moved the main exit to the "opposite side" so it is going to be a bit of a walk.

Have docked in C 3 times. The last time about 3 years ago, dock had been renovated. Cruise ship provided bus to outside the dock area and it was the only way to get from the ship to outside the dock area. We got dropped off at a bus drop off/ taxi pickup area. Public bus then goes from that area to the train station.

Problem: ship docked very early, it was drizzling and public bus from bus drop off area did not start running until about 8am. We were able to grab a taxi as it was a bit too far to walk in the drizzle with suitcases.

We have been through Civit... from a cruise ship five times. We think it is easy to do. The shuttle bus inside the port will take you from your ship to the main entrance. From there it is a short, flat walk - quarter mile or less - along the beach to the train station. You can see the station from the port entrance so just follow the flow headed to the station. It is an easy walk unless you have a couple tons of luggage. Taxis generally will not take you to the station since they want the big fare of going to Rome. Bus can be a problem because it will be jammed with other travelers.

Second, at any train station prior to Civit... buy a Regionale train ticket between Civit and Rome Termini. The line to buy tickets at the station can be long and slow. That way you just walk through the station, validate the ticket, and get on the first time R train (Regionale) to Rome. It is a commuter run. Three, four trains an hour but not all trains are R. At least one train an hour is an IC or faster train. Your ticket would not be good on that train so be sure it is a R train. The time board inside the station will tell you the type of train and platform number. It is easy to do.
