formal night clothes in Alaska

We are going to be cruising on the Ryndam in June, then doing a week on land on our own, so need a variety of clothes. Trying to limit what we pack, would a sports jacket and tie be ok for formal night for my husband, rather than a suit or tux? He wears dress shirts and ties to work every day and looks forward to not having to wear them when on vacation.

HAL is a formal line and Ryndam a smaller ship so even more so. IMO, they are not a good choice for those looking for a casual vacation. We prefer HAL for that reason and will be aboard again in 10 days.

He will be allowed in the dining room but most of the gentlemen will be in dark suits and tuxes.

Some cruise lines rent tuxes. They are delivered to the room, and you leave them behind at the end of the cruise. This must be arranged ahead of time. Don't know about your ship.
