Hi Judy....

Any way to see that Porthole item on web? I was on final voyage of ssNorway as well, and I did meet S Card (what a great artist!).

Michael
NYC (still goin' strong!)
But I thought alot of cruise lines have crews from Islamic countries. In that case an extremist crew member would be on board with you.
Yeah ..... and so could a serial killer.
Rae,
Most people from Islamic Countries, just like most Americans or Europeans are nice, hard-working people.
Every Country has its embarrasments,
remember Timothy McVey? Ted Kizenski? Son of Sam?
That is why I lock my doors on a cruise ship. You never know who your neighbor is.
Two thoughts on this one...

* It's a dirty little secret of the cruise industry that none of the ships are registered in the U.S. so that they can avoid tax, environmental, and labor law. Yet, when things get dicey, this same industry runs to the U.S., looking for Coast Guard support, etc.

* I'm sure that the cruise industry does as poor of a job screening its staff as the airport security staff does screening its staff. That seems like the weakest link to me by far.

Bill: Sent you a personal e-mail requesting your address so that I could mail a copy of the Porthole issue requested to you. Since my e-mail was on the major fritz for awhile, I wonder if you received it. If not, drop me a personal message with your address...you wouldn't want the serial killers or Islamic crew members lurking here to be able to track you down.
Not all Islamics are terrorists, but it takes one fanatic out of a crew of Islamics to cause panic. Any more than a crew of **** will cause panic also.
I wonder how the cruise lines pick their crew? Are they screened?
Oh please...will this stupid thread ever end?
Ignorance is bliss.
Well, I think it is a legimate concern, after all you are bobbing around mid ocean with your crew.
It is not really a legitimate concern as the last death on a cruise ship caused by terrorist activity was in the early to-mid 80's aboard the Achille Lauro (sp?) when Mr. Klinghoffer was murdered. And, as far as I can recall, that has been it in the nearly 30 years I have been cruising. One death. One.

Compare that to the approximately 40,000 people who will be killed THIS YEAR alone by handguns in the US. The 42,000 people who will die THIS YEAR alone on the roads in the US. The 8,000 people who will dies THIS YEAR alone by being given the wrong prescription drugs. The 20,000 people who will dies THIS YEAR alone because of the flu. The 437,000 people who will die THIS YEAR alone due to problems caused by smoking (40,000 of which is due to second hand smoke). The 285,000 people who will die THIS YEAR alone due to problems caused obesity. The 725,000 people who will die THIS YEAR alone due to problems caused cardiopulmonary disease. The 550,000 people who will die THIS YEAR alone due to problems caused by cancer. (Granted some of those numbers overlap, by it's the point that matters.)

In the last TEN years, less than 1,000 people have died in airline accidents on US carriers. And that one death nearly twenty years ago aboard the cruise ship.

I'm the gal that started this thread and ya know what.....I know I'm anxious/excited for the cruise....so no more bashing each other okay? Play nice kids! ;-)
Kris: I wouldn't be proud of myself for starting this stupid thread. If your scared to travel, either cancel or go see a therapist.
Reg: Your cruel man, she's just trying to get everyone to lighten up. If you read her first post and followed thru, you'd see she was bringing upa legit concern and some other folks gave valid answers.
Right on Jim. Last thing we need is a guy like reg making a comment like that. We are hear to help people like kris
Interesting thread, but Bill, the terrorists have done a few things since Mr. Klingoffer's murder. I seem to recall something happening on Sept. 11.
Remember? It is something to think about, but I fear most Americans tend to gloss over their fears in order to have the perennial good time. But that could be a good thing.
Annie,

What happened on September 11 is not the point. The point remains that regardless of what has happened, and what might still happen in the future, your chances of dying doing anything else besides cruising or traveling by air are far, far worse.

As this subject pertains to air and cruise travel, the odds are in your favor. More so than driving to the grocery store.
Well, I think the point is, 9-11 attacks were carried out by an Islamic terrorist group that is worldwide and still active.
It is a fact, but travel as you want.
I too am just concerned with crews and dock workers, etc., not so much fellow passengers.
