excursions
Can someone suggest what excursions we should take? We are cruising on Celebrity Constellation to the Southern Carribean leaving Feb 25, 2006. The brochure I downloaded is 38 pages long. A bit overwhelming. We are traveling with MIL who is 77 yo and will probably be using a wheel chair as needed.

What are your ports of call?

Our ports of call are San Juan(Puerto Rico), Casa de Campo (Dominican Republic), Bridgetown(Barbados), St. George's(Grenada), Basse-Terre(St Kitts),and St. Thomas.

I haven't been to any of these ports on a cruise but I have been to some of them as part of a land vacation. I can suggest the following if they are offered:
Dominican Republic -- there is a tour company that offers a jungle outback safari that is a lot of fun. It's an open backed truck (where the passengers sit) and they take you on a tour of the country side. You visit a "typical" DR home, a coffee plantation, a ranch and they take you to the beach. Guides were wonderful and the rum and beer flows. Bridgetown -- we were just there for one day (12 hour stopover on a flight) and we just got a taxi driver to give us a tour of the island. He was very informative and stopped wherever we wanted to take pictures. St. Kitts -- I loved St. Kitts. They have an amazing fort. Or a catamaran ride that stops on Nevis can be fun too. San Juan and St. Thomas I haven't been to yet. Although, I'll see St. Thomas on a cruise in February and San Juan ins 2007. Enjoy your cruise! |
St. Thomas - A day sail with www.sailyachtnightwind. This is a private sail with a wonderful lunch and very personalized. If your MIL is mobile enough to board the sailboat this might be nice.
St. Kitts - My favorite island on our S.Caribbean cruise! We hired a driver at the dock for 8 of us and took a tour of the island stopping at the fort, batik and gardens, beach. It was around $25 PP and it was about 4 hours.Make sure the vehicle is air conditioned. Try to avoid the ship tours. We did a ship sponsored catarman snorkle in Aruba ONCE and 83 people were on board. Not to mention many other cruise ships in the same area..It felt like a zoo after such a nice peaceful sail with Nightwind. Sounds like a great itinerary! I'm getting tired of snow and cold here in Central NY!!! |
The taxi drivers on St. Kitts are licensed and their licensing includes taking a course about the island's history, geography, etc.
