Dress code QM2 Transatlantic US-->UK
 

We're moving back to England next month (Aug 2010) via the eastbound QM2 transatlantic cruise. We've cruised NCL before (Bahamas, Western Caribbean) but NEVER something as nice as Cunard. Have been scouring YouTube videos trying to get a handle on the dress code. It appears that what we see is sometimes averse to what we read about dress code. We are seeing people in trainers and shorts in places like the gift shop, and walking around the boat. Can someone give us some direction on dress code? (Obviously, we know about dressing up for dinner, etc.) Cheers!!

Dress codes only apply to dinner. During the day, shorts are not inappropriate depending on the time of year. And I suspect it will be fairly hot even in August in the north Atlantic. I'd still pack something warmer to wear on cool nights, but days can be warm.

Temperatures were quite cool outside for my July voyages last year (low 60s F were the high for many days in the north Atlantic), more so closer to England than closer to New York City, so you definitely will want a windbreaker or a sweater. (If you want to go to the outdoor pool, go the first or second day!)

Yes, the dress code only applies to dining in all but the King's Court and unlike some other lines, passengers across the board do dress up, I viewed it as part of the fun. I noticed that people tend to try to look a little nicer I found for the afternoon tea, although nothing's set in stone there.

However, in the library, walking to the gym, going to a show at the Planetarium, going to the spa, using the Internet, grabbing a meal at the King's Court, going about one's daily interests outside of dining... ultra-casual (yep, even shorts & T-shirt) is fine.

Since we don't plan on attending the Black and White BAll, I'm assuming my DH will not have to bring his Tux. We are traveling onward from London by train and car in France and I don't want excess baggage to haul on and off trains. Will a dark suit or dark blazer and dress slacks be okay? I have several dressy tops and crepe pants so I should be good to go.

I was on the QM2 in January, not transatlantic, but caribbean. The dress code was shipwide for the whole evening, not just for dinner. A tux is not necessary and you will be fine with the dressy tops and crepe pants.
