Denali or Kenai?
We are a family of six ( 2 21 year olds, a 17 year old and a 15 year old) going to Alaska on a Princess cruise. We are flying into anchorage and have three nights before the cruise leaves -- trying to decide whether to go north to Denali or South to Kenai Peninsula? Any suggestions?

We've only been to Denali, which was wonderful. Have you checked the CC Alaska Board. I'd certainly want input from Budget Queen, who helped us with our itinerary before our Regent cruise from Seward to Vancouver.

I am new at this -- can you tell me what the cc alaska board and how do I get in touch with Budget Queen?

When we went into Denali, we saw NO wildlife. Very disappointing!!! We also went to Seward and loved the intimate cruise of the area on a small boat; we saw orcas, humpback whales, sea birds, otters, etc. Also, the aquarium was one of the best I've ever been in. We also spent a couple of days in Homer, a really cute little town. If you go there, visit the art studio just before you enter the town.

We had 8 days and did both last June - I asked family (2 parents, 18 and 22 year olds) if they had done only one, which would they pick. It was split 50-50.
Denali - long scenic ride there, long terrifying (to me) bus ride into Denali where dirt road is 1 inch wider than the bus and there are big drops off roadway - and then you have to pass another bus. We saw a dozen or so big mammals, all at a distance - except for 3 sleeping bears beside the roadway. But it felt like "real" Alaska. And you get to drive thru Wasilla, home of Sarah Palin - who no one inside or outside of Alaska had even heard of when we were there last June. Seward - feels like northern coastal fishing port (a little like northern New England). We took a 6 hour sealife cruise and it was wonderful (after the seasick pills kicked in). Saw lots of glaciers, even calving. Whales, otters, and mountain goats. Also felt like Alaska when on the water. Better food, less driving, some cute shops. So I think it is a toss-up and discuss pros and cons with your family. Do not try to do both - that would be silly. |
I'm sorry. I shouldn't have used so much jargon. Anyway, it is the Cruise Critic Alaska board; the link is:
http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55 I'm sure if you look at the posts, or post a question, you'll see lots of comments (or replies) by Budget Queen. I just looked at a random post with a lot of replies, and hers was the third or fourth one. |
