Cruising in December

Last 2 weeks in December we (couple, late 50th) are going on a cruise from Rio, Brazil to Santiago, Chile cruising Atlantic, Antarctica and Pacific with stops in all major cities on the way. If any of the readers of my message have been on a trip, similar to this one, please let me know if you do not mind answering some of the questions I have before I start my preparation. I would like to thank you in advance for your time.

Thank you Sandy. Few questions, if you do not mind. Shore excursions - can they be done locally (we do like guided tours), without reserving them from cruise line with its high cost? How far is the cruise ship terminal from Santiago airport? We arrive early in the morning and our flight home is late at night. Holland America offers city tour with transfer to the airport for $200 p/p. I think it is a bit too much. Will we be able to find same at the cruise ship terminal for less? I have similar question for Rio, but you did not fly to Rio, I understand. Anything you can tell me about the ports you visited on your way interests me. I am sure they were same for Princess, as for Holland America. What I dont like about tours with cruise ship, besides their high cost - it takes forever to fill those big buses; time is wasted on stops to get everyone back in the bus; too many people - too many questions... Usually I arrange guided tours ahead of time via Internet or telephone. But this time I could not find anything on the Internet and, I really do not even know where to look. Nothing in terms of tour agents in the Internet for Rio, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and for Santiago. Not to mention for those small towns and ports. Thanks again, Sandy.
