Cruise Phobic - but am considering it!
 

we are thinking of going on a cruise, which would be a first for us. I have resisted the idea for years, but my partner has some disabilities and we think that's really the best way to see Africa. Aside from the small ships like Cruise West, can anyone recommend a cruise line that is not a complete zoo and a cast of thousands? thank you

Holland America & Celebrity are 2 of the mainstream lines that come to mind.
Others like Regent and others that are more expensive are never upsetting.

Your 'complete zoo' comment has more to do with summer & holiday cruising on the more mass market lines when kids are out of school and on the shorter length cruises.

We take 10 days or more usually on Holland America. 2007, we'll be taking a 56 day to Africa and the Med and in 2008 a 65 day to Asia & Australia with an 18 day repositioning after that.

It sounds like Regent or Silversea may be perfect for you since they carry far fewer passengers than some of the other larger ships. We will be leaving soon on Regent Voyager with extensive port stops all around Africa. Not sure if Seabourn does similar but they also have far fewer passengers. All 3 of these lines are upscale and all inclusive which is really wonderful. I think you'd be thrilled with these type cruise lines and become an easy cruise convert.

I would choose Regent first and HAL if price is an issue. The smaller ships of HAL provide a service oriented experience.
They also do a great job for disabled travellers, possibly because their clientele is somewhat older than some of the other lines.

Depending on your age of your partner and yourself.. I would go with Celebrity..their smaller ships..Holland American is really geared to a much older crows..The Century and Galaxy have very interesting itineraries for next year.. including Morocco and Canary Islands.. Recommend you cruise AFTER the end of September when kids are back in school.
