Crown Princess Lists injuring passengers

You can watch it live, but cruisecritic is down, naturally.

maryann Jul 19th, 2006 05:12 AM

I was on Cruisecritic @ 5pm and all was fine, then at 6 I heard about the tipping and went to CC and it was down - the system probably crashed as soon as everyone heard about it.

Hope it's up now, haven't checked this AM yet.

BeachBoi Jul 19th, 2006 05:29 AM

I'd like to rehear the comment by the woman who said the Captain's voice was "panicky" on the PA System....And the movie shceduled for last night?? Guess.......

LLindaC Jul 19th, 2006 05:51 AM

ooohhh, I know. You won't get the full scope of it till passengers start telling stories. Cruisecritic still won't open the Princess boards! Really frightening, and a brand new ship!

LoriNY1 Jul 19th, 2006 05:51 AM

I heard the movie was 'Titanic'. I can't believe they would show this on a cruise ship..............

BeachBoi Jul 19th, 2006 05:57 AM

Well, I cant believe the rudder went kaput!! "Titanic" for the movie, at least it was the last night of the cruise.Or so they thought. Is Mercury in retrograde??

maryann Jul 19th, 2006 06:44 AM

Cruisecritic is up & running but sooo slow. I was on the Princess board for awhile. Seems like things are not so panicky now as it was pretty bad yesterday. Now people are leaving in buses and going to airports, etc.

It will be awhile until it is investigated and fixed to find the flaw. This happened on another Princess ship and about 3-4 yrs ago on a HAL ship (according to postings on CC) The HAL ship episode was verified to me by a ship's officer. Hopefully now it will be corrected permanently.

Suerich68 Jul 19th, 2006 08:02 AM

Was that a Princess ship that had the fire a few months ago? Was the cause ever found?

Hard to believe that any ship would show "Titanic" - especially due to content but also because the film is almost 10 years old & shown on TV daily!

This is SO awful. I had no idea how much damage & injury were incurred. My thoughts & prayers are with all the injured.

mdmomof7 Jul 19th, 2006 11:13 AM

Just checked the Caribbean Princess Patters for last week and they also showed Titanic at MUTS! Weird!!

Suerich68 Jul 19th, 2006 11:33 AM

There's a new update on cruisecritic.com dated today. A lot of injuries, but everyone survived - a miracle. There were 3,500 on board.

ParrotMom Jul 20th, 2006 04:56 AM

There are two critical patients.. one being a five year old girl that the cruisers were really worried about.. Now the question is... would you cruise that ship!!! On top of that the Godmother for the ship is Martha Stewart...lol

cd Jul 20th, 2006 05:12 AM

ParrottMom
I never knew that ships had Godmothers. ???

Suerich68 Jul 20th, 2006 06:58 AM

Every ship is christened - MS christened the Crown Princess!

I saw a photo in the NY Post yesterday taken by a passenger. It was very interesting when you compared the ship to the horizon; and the person who showed me the picture said he has taken 40 cruises & did not agree with the 30-45 degree list angle. I had to agree - the picture showed people standing near the pool; and one person was standing on the pool steps, seemed to be either entering or leaving the pool, but not holding on to the pool railing.

LoriNY1 Jul 20th, 2006 07:21 AM

The news this morning said it was only a 15 degree list, not the 30 or so first reported. But still enough to do some damage. A friend called last nite and told us his mother was on the ship. She is in a wheelchair and was thrown from the chair. She was pretty banged up and spent the nite in the hospital, but thankfully OK

In case you missed my post, it is #3 on this tread. I was on the ship and believe me noone could have been standing on a pool step without holding on. My blog including pictures of the aftermath is at:

It's looking to be human error for a second time. Makes you wonder about the qualifications of the Princess ship's officers. Two major list incidents in 5 months.

ParrotMom Jul 22nd, 2006 06:19 PM

All ships have Godmothers... are you ready for this....Martha Stewart was the Godmothr on the illfated ship.. On the NCL Majesty if I remember it's Liza Minelli.. the first Godfather recently named was a Senator from Hawaii..One of the cruise sites just recently had a story about favorite Godmothers of ships and why..

Dukey Jul 23rd, 2006 01:35 AM

The Captain said that woman who characterized his voice as "panicky" was actually "drunk."

She's the same woman who describes everyone who doesn't give her what she wants as "rude."

kfusto Jul 26th, 2006 06:44 AM

Actually, I had friends on this sailing and MANY characterized the Captain's voice as shaky, as well it should have been.

BeachBoi Jul 26th, 2006 07:28 AM

I believe I read a report that immediately following the incident, the Captain sprinted from a distant deck area, and did his best imitation of Sperman up two flights of stairs, grabbing the microphone before taking another breath.Yes, he was breathless.

Patty Jul 26th, 2006 12:08 PM

I was on the NCL Sky in May 2001 when it listed 8 degrees so can imagine how severe a 15 degree list must feel. Guess what movie theme song was playing throughout our ship shortly after the list? ;)

In December of that same year, I was on the Sea Princess which was captained by Andy Proctor at that time (captain who's currently on Crown). We had a discussion about the NCL list, the cause of which was said to be an "autopilot malfunction". Captain Andy thought that wasn't possible and believed the NCL incident to be caused by human error instead. Thinking back to that conversation, it's somewhat eerie and ironic that this happened on his watch.

Suerich68 Jul 27th, 2006 05:12 AM

They should probably be careful what they say about those things = like everything else, it comes back & bites you in the posterior.

MARGOULA Aug 2nd, 2006 01:32 PM

I was on the Crown Princess with my husband, sister in law and her husband.
I was on my balcony - starboard side - it was terrifying. I was thrown off my lounge chair. All you could hear was terrifying screams from all over the ship. It was tipping very slowly and then started to move quicker. I really thought we were going over. I believe it was more than 15 degrees list. We were on Deck 9 right above the life boats. The captain was definitely in a Panic. When we heard his voice we knew it was bad. He told us it was a rudder malfunction....then a computer error. Then told us we were continuing on to NY which really sent me into a panic. When he came on again within about 30 - 4o minutes he told us the cruise was terminated and we would be given full refunds - then I was convinced this was really a serious error. Maybe the Coast Guard - when they finally got thru to him - told him to turn around. It took us four hours to get back to Port Canaveral - he was going so slow - and obviously could not make any sharp turns. Never again. This was our third cruise and it was wonderful - but we really felt as though we were going over.

Suerich68 Aug 3rd, 2006 06:43 AM

Margoula,

That certainly sounds like it was very frightening. Glad you & your family are OK.

We are taking our 3rd cruise in December - I love cruising but I've always been really afraid of the water.

Just curious - do you think you'll ever cruise again?

P_M Aug 3rd, 2006 09:33 AM

Margoula, I am so glad you are OK, and thanks for sharing your story with us. I was going to ask the same question about cruising again. Will you?
