Creepy bed bugs?

Did anyone hear about the hundreds of creepy bugs in one couple's stateroom on a Carnival cruise recently? The found bugs crawling inbetween the bed sheets. I just saw it on the tv news tonight. They had bug bits on their backs and face. Yikes!

It was not Carnival - it was Royal Carribean.

Maryann, do you know what ship.

Sorry, I can't remember. It was on the news here in West Palm Beach and Miami station, too. (WSVN.com, may be on their website)- RCI is giving refund, etc, etc. (as they should, the pics were gross) If I see the news story again - I'll repost.

Jewel of the Seas. Remember, people bring these critters on board. I feel sorry for RCCL's reputation, even though I haven't sailed with them in several years.

You can read the traveler's review at www.cruise-addicts.com's reviews section. I just read an article that said the occurance of bed bugs is dramatically on the rise, and they are almost impossible to get rid of.

Spooky:[:[ I just went to cruise-addicts and the post has been removed. A cover up is in the works!

In short the couple was so sick they had to leave the ship at it's first port. RCCL paid all their expenses but the wife is still in bad shape looks wise.

There was a follow-up on the news this AM. More people were on showing their bug bites. One lady had some in a jar !

I'm getting itchy just typing this.

Yes, the bedbugs problem is getting more frequent in hotels, etc. Yuk !

Oh that is awful news. Jewel of the Sea is a new ship also. We sailed on Grandeur of the Sea from NO. last Jan. We had a problem with sand in the bed. We mentioned it and of course the entire bed was changed and still no difference. I chalked it up to an old ship. I swore never to sail on an older ship.

Actually, it's part of RCL's new "onboard pets" program--a convenience for cruisers who miss their animals at home. They charge extra for it.

I think they would take issue with the adjective "creepy"--they prefer "cuddly lil' pals"...

I heard on the news that Royal Caribbean reimbursed the couple the cost of the cruise but refused to pay for any medical bills. That doesn't seem right.

Before I cruised this summer I checked out some cruise review websites and saw posts about bed bugs. I was so freaked out! The only thing I can say is that it happens in even the best of hotels too - I'd seen on the news some fancy NYC hotels had bed bugs. It's certainly creepy, but perhaps when you get into your room on the cruise, check out the matress a bit before you get in it. You really shouldn't HAVE to do that, but maybe as a precaution. When I saw the news story about the hotel bed bugs, they said they like to hang out around the seams or the corners of the mattress. It might make you feel a little bit better that first night!

The increase in bed bugs has been creating news for at least a couple of years now - all the reports have gotten me so creeped out that the first thing I always do when I get to my hotel room is to check the bed mattress/box spring for signs of bed bugs.

Maybe a bit paranoid, but bedbugs can be found at any type of hotel - the quality/star rating does not matter.
