Costa ship ran aground off coast of Italy a few hours ago

Not many details yet except that eight people died, some from jumping into the water. Others have been rescued. Sad.

In our local paper, 3 bodies found, 3 more missing, feared dead. This is horrible!

The newest ship of Costa fleet.

This is terrible, it seems, they had difficulties evacuating people.

The lastest I find says about 50 people still traped on board. For awhile it was 200, so they are making progress. Thank goodness it has stayed afloat as long as it has. I can't imagine the terror. Makes the Noro Virus seem like not much.

Dayenu,
Thanks for posting that website. I had not seen it. I guess staying afloat is one thing, but the listing of the ship made it so difficult. Being dark didn't help any. They are so close to land and people and help, I think they will all get off now safely. I sure hope so.

We saw this on the news early this morning. Terrible. My thoughts are with those who were on that ship.

Hi Sass, here is the latest ...3 dead 69 missing ... very sad.
They have only accounted for 4,165 of the 4,234 people on board.

This will certainly dampen the enthusism for cruising, at least for quite a few people. Costa caters mainly to Europeans and is part of the Carnival-Cunard-Princess-HAL empire. The Concordia is relatively new, being launched in 2006.

I was surprised to see the giant gash on the hull and the end result of how the ship is listed. I thought everyone had learnt the Titanic lesson and at least in this instance, the watertight compartments still doesn't work.

There will be lots of fall outs and speculations. It would be almost certain that the bridge crew would be found at fault to run aground with such force to creat that kind of a gash. But it still does not explain why it took so long to issue the evacaution order, or the lack of a drill when the ship first left port(the drill was scheduled for the afternoon of the accident). There would be many questions that needs to be answered.

I am suddenly reminded of Capt Sully, the pilot who landed that plane on the East River. He walked back through the plane twice in knee deep, then waist deep water, to make sure no one was left.

I wouldn't expect a Capt to go down under water to look for anyone, but this doesn't seem to be what you hope will be the leadership of a capt of any vessel. Of course, no facts at this point. Sad for everyone.

There are pages and pages of long and detailed discussions on cruisecritic.com, some by naval people who appear to be knowledgeable as to the construction of the ship and what could have or probably did happen. It is very interesting.

I keep thinking the same!!

This morning they said, a couple on honeymoon just taken off the ship - and a voice of another person was heard.

I am almost afraid to ask - if somebody is in the cabin when a disaster happens, is it possible at all to open the door?
