communicating from remote ship--need help please

Hi, I'm taking a cruise in the northern passage in Alaska and I've been told that there is practically no cell service. I have a elderly mom that I'll need to call--any advice of how I can do that. should i rent a sat phone? Thanks

As an alternative to a Sat Phone you could use the ship's wi-fi (presumably they have it) and use Skype or What's App to make a call to your mother. If you already plan to buy an internet package that might be the least expensive method.

Also check out the boat's ship to shore calling rates - maybe that's the simplest thing to do - just use their facilities when you don't have a cell signal

We haven't established whether you mean the northern passage, or inside passage, but you received a lot of very detailed advice on your threas on the US forum.

Thanks and it's the inside passage.

That makes a HUGE difference. Absolutely no need for a sat phone.

Ship's phone rate is high as it is satellite phone.
Call using Skype is best option as it can dial land line.
