We are planning to cruise Alaska on the Island Princess. Our college daugther wants to go as our third person. Princess says that the cabin has a pull down bed out of the wall, which becomes like a bunk bed in these cabins.

Is this bed comfortable and safe feeling?

We do not want to spend the money for a balcony room and they are the only rooms which offer sofa beds. We also have to take the Island Princess due to embarkment date coinciding with work.

We have not booked as yet. We would like true opinion.

We have done it several times with our two sons. The beds are fine. Makes the cabin pretty tight. One small tip -- we select a cabin near the public restrooms on the deck so that you kind of have a second bathroom when you need it.

We book cabins with Pullman bed instead of sofa bed.

Sofa beds on older ships are often uncomfy and they take up precious space in the cabin. We were not able to get to the balcony once the sofa bed is pulled out.

Pullman beds are okay but they do not take up space! Last cruise son found his a bit hard but the room steward put egg-crate foam on it when we asked.

fmpden, you mentioned that the room was tight. Is that with the Pullman bed? Does the Pullman bed go up everyday or do we leave it down all the time?

The cabin steward puts them up in the morning when he makes up the room.

The two single beds in the made into a couple of day sofas. At night these became two beds, and the pull downs were turn into beds. It was cozy but efficient. Kind looked more like two bunk beds. We did almost 60 days of European cruising in this configuration. Last year we cruised for the first time in 25 years without the boys and did know what to do with all of the extra room. My the last cruise with boys they were pretty good size and found the beds comfortable.

We traveled with our 16 Y/O son and had a pull down bed. It was no problem. We didn't spend much time in the room as it was a bit cramped but it really wasn't a problem at all. Being near a public rest room is a good hint. It came in handy a few times for us.
