choosing the right ship

I am planning an 80th birthday celebration for 14 people which will include 4 separate families 5 children aged 13 - 19, and the birthday "girl" and her husband(aged 86) who does have health issues which limit his sight and ability to walk long distances. So the cruise has to offer activities for the young adults as well as the older generation. We are interested in the Carribean in mid to late June before the storm season arrives. Any suggestions?

I hate to tell you but June is hurricane season but not to worry..the ship will steer clear of any hurricanes. It's best to be flexible and be happy if you happen to visit an alternate port.

You might want to rent a wheelchair for mobility problems. It is not unusual to see w/c's . You also might want to get a cabin near the elevators but it can still be a long walk to the dining room. Check the deck plans for cabin location.

Don't know about kids activities but there is the casino, bingo, the nightly shows and lounge entertainment for the older folks.

www.cruisecritic.com is a great site for all kinds of cruise info.

With such a large and varied group, I'd recommend a large ship with a lot of facilities and programs. Virtually any cruise line can fit the bill. All offer a wide range of activities on their large ships. So aside from that, what are you interested in?

Hurricane season begins in June and ends at end of Nov, and its peak is in Sept. We had 3 major hurricanes here in the last 2 decades and all came during the month of Sept but different years.

Cruise ships steer clear of the storms and may change itinerary if needed.

Doug is correct: a large ship is best for you all.

June may be officially a start of hurricane season but in fact, they never happen in June and start mostly in August. You'll face a different issue: hot Caribbean weather. If this is no problem, as far as ships, look at Voyager or Freedom class of Royal Caribbean, or Vista class Holland America. For lower budget and still good cruise, new Carnival ships: Liberty, Freedom, Conquest.
