cell phones

do they work on a cruise on the inside passage - i need to be in touch with my office for a budget issue?

Not sure if your particular service will work, but most newer ships have phone service from your cabin. It's expensive, but if it's a business call, it's on your employer's nickel.

Ghennesy. You will need to give us more information to help you.

Who is the phone service through?

Where are you cruising?

Will the cruise take you close to the shore line etc...?

Verizon and Cingular have the best coverage areas in the US.

Also can be dependent on if it is a tri mode phone.

Give me more info. And I will see if I can help you.

Side note:

Do you have a two way pager?

They work on a different frequency and can work better in areas with dense metal structures.

If this is a really big deal ( make or break money issue). You may want to consider renting a satellite phone.

It has been my experience on cruises with my cellphone that service ends just outside of the ports. You will be able to use your cellphone in Vancouver or Seattle and all of the ports, but the Inside Passage is a very under-populated area with lots of rocky islands, nearby mountain ranges and coastline, and the areas don't have cell towers. There is phone service in the staterooms and most cruise ships now have Internet cafes and fax service. The phones are very expensive, but depending on how much work you will need to do - the e-mail prices are pretty reasonable.

Have a great day!

I cruised the inside passage two years ago and my phone did not work right after we left Vancouver.

I have Sprint and cruised Inside Passage last year.

I could get a roaming signal from most ports and did use my phone. My bill was pretty $$ when I got back.

GHennessy, need some input to help you out.

Or is this a moot point now?

Nope no service on the Inside passage, but I had service in all ports with Verizon.
