cashing travelers checks on the ship

Hi,

I understand that I can cash travelers checks at the pursur's desk. Is this true? What is the daily limit that I am allowed to cash? I am asking because I understand that the ATM's on board often run out of cash.

Thank you

I don't know of any limit. Never had a problem cashing travelers checks of any amount.

Travelers checks are like cash to the ship.

You can cash as many as you like and there isn't a fee. I am assuming you are not going to cash $100,000, right? Never heard of them running out.

Not all ships have ATM machines.

I agree with the first two posts to your question. I've never heard of them limiting you.

The real problem with the ATM's is that they must check with your bank to see if you have cash in your account each time you make an ATM withdrawl. This happens in a fraction of a second when you use a land based ATM and you don't even know it's happening. The problem with ship ATM's is they must do this Via a satellite up-link which cause two problems, one, they must charge you a very high service charge for each transaction and, two, the satellite link on a moving ship is difficult to establish at best.

I have seen on more than one cruise where the ATM works in the home port and goes off line for the remainder of the cruise.

You are wise to use travelers checks and DO cash them at the Pursers Desk. While shore merchants will also usually accept them I always feel more confident using the Purser instead of some merchant who I don't know and will probably never see again.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies Starfish, Theresa, and hold.

I have one more thing to add that people might want to invesiigate that want to go on a cruise. On the Carnival shipt the only way you could cash a travelers check at the pursurs desk is if you have american express travelers checks and an anerican express credit card.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks
