Carrying passports while on excursions?

Hi. We are doing a western carribbean (belize, cayman, cozumel, rotan) in a few weeks & wanted to know if you are supposed to carry your passports with you while on the island / or on an excursion.

Thanks!

This question has been asked and answered on other boards with mixed reactions.

The danger of it being stolen while on a beach, etc would prevent you from wanting to carry it offship.

On the other hand, if you take ill or are in an accident and cannot get back to the ship - and - have to get back home some other way, then you would need the passport.

In 13 cruises, we have never needed it on land - but - I'm a big believer in 'just in case' so I'm going to make a copy of the important pages and carry that with me.
