CAPTAINS TABLE
I was just curious if anyone knows or can comment on how the cruise lines pick the passengers that sit at the captains table on the formal nights ?
On our last cruise a couple sitting next to us got picked and when I asked the gentleman about the process he basially told me that he was a "great guy" and that the staff on the cruise ship must have just figured out he would make a good guest to sit at the table. So I am curious if anyone has any knowledge of the process ? |
I'm still trying to figure that one out. On our last cruise on Celebrity Century, we were "picked" and had a glorious time but I'm still scratching my head as to how or why we were picked. We were certainly the youngest couple at the table as everybody else was a little more mature. I'd be curious as well if anyone has any thoughts on this.

GBRBEB.....If your cabin is the Owners Suite/Royal Suite etc, you'll be at the Captains Table every night! If you are a repeat (dozen or so eg) cruiser;certainly a celebrity or statesman of some sort.My TA has told me of times when he has written to the cruise line and requested this on behalf of a client for some reason. And, yes, there are random selections based on criteria only known to the person making that selection (Social Director,Purser, etc etc). Many cruise lines make the Captains Table a true PR event, so everyone at the table must at least LOOK like a celeb......

Interesting. We have certainly been on enough cruises (at least Celebrity) to qualify for that line. I was always lead to believe that selections were random. Of course I would understand if your were in the Owners Suite though. I guess some of the old class system does still exist.

I had two friends who got to sit with the captain on NCL coming home from Bermuda. One was a repeat customer, the other one NOT. The fact that they were both female (and one, a very pretty single blonde) probably didn't hurt a bit! They had a nice time. Let's see if they get the same treatment on the Caribbean Princess trip this August!

I can tell you from experience on RCCL that being in one of the most expensive cabins does not mean you'll be at the Captain's Table "every night" and if you believe that kind of ridiculous generalization then you probably also believe you can cruise the Caribbean in a rowboat.
Being in those accommodations often does get you to "the Table" but so does having taken 60+ cruises as had one of the table attendees on one of the nights I was being winded and dined; on another cruise out of San Juan, one attendee just "happens" to own the company that sells ALL the fule oil to ALL the cruise ships that come in and out of San Juan. Random selection???? on RCCL not necessarily. |
