Cape Horn Weather in February
 

Booked a cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina to Port Montt, Chile on the Song of Flower, crusining Cape Horn and the Chilean fjords. Does anyone know what to expect weatherwise in that area. Even though it is summer, I think it might be a bit cool cool around the glaciers. I would apppreciate any help with this.

We were at Cape Horn in February 2001; it was windy and chilly. The seas can be rough around the Cape--be prepared because the Song of Flower does not ride well in high seas (we had a very rocky ride around New Zealand's South Island in 2000). If you do have a nice day and fair weather, the Cape is awesome. Few ships land passengers on the Cape due to weather but if yours does and you are in good shape, try climbing up to the top!

We were around Cape Horn a few years ago on the way back from Antartica. Going down it was very smooth. Coming back the weather was perfect but the sea was rough. The waves went all the way over the captain's bridge. We were on the Northern Ranger, a fairly small ship, but it had no problems - just rolling and pitching. I thought of the tiny boats that went through there in the early days.

We were on the Norwegian Dream in March of this year. An excerpt of my journal of the trip: "Late afternoon found us approaching Cape Horn. The weather was kind of variable, ranging from fog to sunshine. The ever-present wind changed fog to sun to fog again on frequent intervals. We were able to get a fairly good view of the Cape since the Captain's luck was holding (N.B.:We'd also been able to go ashore at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.) and we had fairly clear and partially sunny weather when we were nearest the Cape. The wind blows incessantly and is always strong. Signs are usually posted on doors leading to exposed decks, and in some instances certain areas are declared off-limits to passengers."<BR><BR>Be sure to layer your clothing. Around the areas of Cape Horn and the Chilean fjords I wore silk long-johns, a shirt, cotton sweater, wind-breaker (with, occasionally a polar-tec vest), and a down shirt and appreciated every thickness!
