Cape Horn Cruise
 

My wife and I are thinking of taking the 14-day Buenos Aires to Santiago cruise around Cape Horn on NCL Norwegian Sun (though we are open to other lines, but January 2-16 works well for us, and the itinerary seems good). Any suggestions? How rough is it? How cold? Is a balcony room worth the extra cost, or will it be too rough to make sitting out on the balcony worthwhile? In general, what can we expect? We've taken a few cruises (Greek islands, Caribbean, Nile River, Boston to Quebec) but most of our tourism has been on land.

"How rough is it?"

There is no way to predict this in advance. Our trip was very mild, but it can get rough. If you are prone to seasickness, have some medication with you just in case.

"How cold?"

In February, the coldest it got for us was temps in the 40ºs

We had a balcony and appreciated it very much. It's not just for going around Cape Horn. Patagonia is very scenic (and calm) You can easily view fjords & glaciers from your own stateroom.

Spectacular scenery. Also, a very good chance to see penguins up close at several ports of call.

We took a Princess cruise from Rio to Valparaiso. If you go from BA, be sure to allow a few extra days in Argentina (for BA and/or Iguazú Falls) and for Valparaiso and/or Santiago. Both are worthwhile visits.

We did this cruise last January on Princess. Going around the Horn was very rough, huge waves and wild seas. It was wonderful, the true Cape Horn Experience. I am not comfortable on the water but knew that my Husband really wanted this experience so I embraced it. I figured the captain knew what he was doing, ha ha. He came on after wards and said that the previous sailings had all been calm and how lucky we were to get the real feel of rounding the horn.

After we rounded the horn the waters went calm again. The 16 day cruise only had 2 days of rough seas. The only place I remember being cold was the Falkland Islands and the Glacier, but it was not that bad. The Falklands was more cold wind than cold temps.
We had a balcony and felt it was worth every penny. Loved this cruise. Enjoy
