Why not rent a car or van?

mykidsmom Apr 15th, 2003 08:05 PM

I just checked into renting a van....$139.00 for one day. Pretty steep, don't you think? There has to be other options!!
HELP!

Check out www.supershuttle.com They charge around $23. from Ft.Lauderdale airport to port of Miami.
$139 / 6 people = $23 / person roughly.

So, the cost is about the same for the shuttle or for the rental. But, in your other post, the recommendation for a rental that you turn in and they take you to the port - saves you the morning taxi. However, another cost you need to be concerned with is whether the hotel charges for parking.

All of your options will be in the same general cost as above. Even if you take 2 taxis, you're looking at $55-65 per taxi, which brings you back to the $125 range.

I would call a limo company and see if you can get a stretch limo that will accomodate all 6 of you and luggage. I think the costs would be comprable, and you'll start your vacation in a much more relaxing way than shuttle bus or renting a car.

The one other option i can think of is to rent 2 cars. Car rentals are pretty cheap in Florida (much cheaper than mini-vans which are 'specialty' vehicles). Make some more phone calls, as there are a few companies that consider FLL to MIA a "round-trip" rental and one charge you the "one way surcharge" that other companies might.

Ft. Lauderdale airport has Tri-county express. They use Lincoln towncars and when we went 1-1/2 yrs. ago it was about $55-60 to miami per carload of people. You would probably have to use 2 cars. They also had a bus there at $15.00 pp. No reservations were needed. They are located right outside baggage claim and will bring you right to your hotel. they have a web site and you may be able to hire a limo from them, but I'm not sure.
