Jennifer, My wife and I took Princess from the London area for a 12 day honeymoon Baltic cruise in 1992. It was wonderful. 2 of the 12 days were spent docked in St. Petersburg. While there we took a long daytrip to Moscow. I cannot recommend this trip enough. Recently I received a Princess mailing and it looks like they actually added more ports on this trip. If memory serves, 4 out of 12 days were at sea.

If 2 days are not enough in Russia, I think there were other ships cruising to St. Petersburg while we were there. I seem to remember a ship that went from Helsinki to St. Petersburg with some frequency (Royal Viking???). Perhaps this could be a way to cruise in, stay a while in local lodging and then cruise back to Finland?

Once in St Petes, we went to the Hermitage and also to a palace just on the outskirts of town. I cannot remember the name at this moment but I remember they called it the Versailles of Russia. It was a huge place with beautiful gardens. Really worth the trip. I cannot tell much more about St. Petes because we did the daytrip to Moscow which took up half our time in Russia. If you go to Moscow, e-mail me for more info. Good Luck!

Jennifer,
I would recommend Princess Cruises. They have been cruising to Europe for many years and offer many different ships in that area. They are very experienced and there tours are all escorted so you are very safe. Have any questions e-mail me.
Hi Jennifer,
If you and your family are truly interested in a cruise to russia, you may want to consider doing a russian river cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow -- my husband and I did RCCL Splendour of the Seas in August 1997 with an overnight stop in St. Petersburg and after returning from the cruise, we decided we really wanted to see russia and booked the river cruise on Odessamerica's Lev Tolstoy. This was an 11 night cruise and we did a 2 night pre cruise at the Astoria Hotel in St. Petersburg. The cruise was wonderful as we were able to totally immerse ourselves in the culture of the country. Odessamerica has it's own web site which you can log onto. If this cruise appeals to you, you can e-mail me and I'll give you further details.

My husband (51), my sister (62), my son (23), my daughter (20), and I (50) took the Holland America Maasdam cruise to Scandanavia and Russia. We all agreed it was the best travel experience of our lives (the 3 oldest have traveled quite a bit). My children would have preferred to have more contemporaries, but admitted we were so busy that it didn't much matter. I was talked into the Aeroflot charter to Moscow, inspite of the airlines reputation, and it was truly an extrordinary experience. Each port was fantastic and the relaxation in between was equally wonderful. I am normally not an effusive person, so you can draw you own conclusions. Have a great time however you choose to get there!

Check with Intrav out of St. Louis for the Russian river trip from St. Petersburg to Moscow or reverse. It is fantastic scenary, two of the major cities with major sights, and many small and remote villages - the other face of Russia. Other companies do similar cruises. See Russia by going into it, not just along its coast.
