Been on the Amsterdam ?
Has anyone been on Holland"s
Amsterdam? Have booked on
a December Carribean cruise and
have since read a bad review.
If you haven't tried it yet, go over to the www.cruisecritic.com site and get into their message boards. They have a site specific by cruise line. There are several positive posts about the Amsterdam over there. We are condsidering that for our next cruise.

I went on the Amsterdam in December 2000. It was the Christmas cruise through the Panama Canal. The ship was lovely as was the service. HAL is first class. The age of the passengers was around 50 - 70. Not a young crowd but I'm not a young man.

HAL Amsterdam is for the ancient folk.

We were on the Amsterdam for 18 days last May, thru the Canal. After six other cruises on three other cruiselines (all mainstream lines, not luxury lines), it will be hard to get me to switch away from HAL. the ship was beautiful, spotlessly clean, well laid out and not overly glitzy, but not boring or overly traditionally decorated. The food was very good to outstanding, with the Lido buffet being a real standout. The alternative dining, an Italian restaurant, was good but not 'all that' and the service was better in the main dining room. Friendliest crew I've ever run into.

Understand, I am 45, my husband 59. And that was about the average range. I am sure that the age range is a bit lower in the Caribbean and for shorter cruises. That being said, I would not have been happy or comfortable on this cruise line when I was under 35. Now, I am delighted to have matured to a better standard of cruising.

We sailed the Amsterdam on her 2nd cruise...and loved it. We are sailing in Alaska on her in September and have booked another South American cruise on her for the fall of 2003. Guess that says it all!
