Balcony Cabin on the Celebrity Eclipse: Obstructed View?
 

Hello,

Our travel agent is offering us a good deal on the Eclipse for a balcony cabin. We can't pick a specific cabin and she warns that we could have a cabin with an obstructed view. We've looked at the views of the ships and can't figure out how we could have an obstructed view with a balcony. Or, could it be that the obstructed view could be off to the side of perhaps a life boat? Any ideas, folks?

Can't think of a reason for a balcony with an obstructed view except for the following 2, which I have come across.

(1) The life boat is on the deck below (or fore/aft), your view is obstructed looking down, (or fore/aft).

(2) You are at the front of the ship, near the top deck, below the command bridge. Your balcony is partially obstructed by the bridge, which protudes out a bit.

If you are paying for an ocean view and get an "obstructed" balcony, I'll take it any day.

Thanks and we've decided to take our chances. When we sat down and analyzed everything, we've decided all we care about is being able to sit out and enjoy the ocean breezes.

We'll save our money for the excursions and onboard shopping.

You can sit and enjoy the ocean breezes at the top decks (Sun deck, sports deck, pool deck, whatever they are called these days) as well on the promenade deck. Unless you intend to use it a alot, balcony cabins may not be necessary.

Are you sure they are talking about a balcony with an obstructed view or an outside cabin with an obstructed view. An outside cabin with an obstructed view would be one with a life boat right outside your window.

What your TA is talking about is the category 2D. It is a full balcony and the obstructions are the lifeboats that hang below you and obstruct your view downward. Not a big deal.

I was just on this ship in December and was extremely impressed. Save up your pennies and make sure that you get a reservation in Qzine. It is quite the experience, unlike any restaurant I have ever been to before. A bit pricey, but worth the very inovative experience.

This is a photo of the Solstice, which is identical to the Eclipse. The ship is symmetrical, so cabins on both port and starboard are the same. The lifeboats are on Deck 5, the partially obstructed and obstructed cabins are on Deck 6. Some are great bargains and are booked as soon as the itinerary is published. We were booked in a 2C and 2D for a back-to-back cruise on the Solstice in 2013. We were able to upgrade, but would book either cabin again without a problem.

Go to cruisecritic.com and find the section for Celebrity. You can join a "roll call" of your fellow passengers on your particular sailing.

I agree with Eschew. Minor "obstructions" in your view from the cabin would be the very least of your problems, since I, personally wouldn't mind seeing the view of the ocean from the deck with the wind sweeping away. But, that's just me.
