As much as I've travelled, I still get 'butterflies'

We have travelled non stop for 28 years, but I still get butterfiles the day we leave for the airport...as I pull away from home and enter t he terminal, I think of all I am leaving behind me, will I ever see my kids again, will I cope with anything that comes us, will bad things happen while I am away (both my mother and my sister died while I was ou t of the country--and I should have been there to hold their hand, etc. Worry worry.

Soon as I am seated on the plane and luggage stowed, a whisky in hand, a deep breath or two, a firm grip on DH's hand, and I am fine. Off to new horizons.

anyone else.

I know what you mean. I don't worry about anything or think about anything specifically but for some reason I get a feeling of anxiety. Then - once on the way I am fine - don't think about home. I used to worry that perhaps I was having some kind of premonition but got over that in a hurry. When my daughter still lived at home I thought maybe it was some kind of separation anxiety - but can't be that anymore. Well, at least it doesn't keep us from travelling - looking forward to the next cruise!!

I'm the same way until I get to my destination. I think about all the things that can go wrong. I really hate the traveling part -- it's become such a hassle -- but I still love seeing new places.

I sort of get a little anxious until we get underway. Once I know all is ok, that we have our luggage, the cabin is as it should be and the OBC has been properly processed and the ship leaves then it's go time!

I get a little anxious on the ride to the airport - I'm wondering if I've left anything vitally important behind or forgotten to pack something.

I know that I most likely have not forgotten anything (I use a detailed packing list for every trip), but the anxiety lasts until I've checked in to my flight and am sitting at the gate.

It probably comes from my childhood memories - during every ride to the airport my mother would spend time frantically scrabbling around in her bag looking for something - airline tickets, her ID, etc. Once or twice we had to turn around and go home to get whatever she had forgotten.

I love travel but get very anxious on the inside. I worry if I have forgotten to do something or left something important behind. When I arrive at my hotel I relax.

Love reading I'm not alone in feeling anxious on the way to the airport. I feel it until we are checked in, scanned, and are sitting in our gate's waiting area. Then and only then do I start to relax. We've traveled a lot, flown a lot, and the feeling is still there every time.

It's called separation anxiety and I'll bet most people suffer from it, some to the degree of never leaving home. I know that as soon as i drive dowm the driveway, I will be cured. I never have worry about a trip ending.

I must have lead a pretty boring life as I usually don't feel any excitment, or anxiety or anything along those line when I travel. Maybe the one time that I thought I have left the front door wide open, pot boiling on the stove and water running in the bath tub ...

All kidding aside, it is normal to feel "different" when embarking on a journey. Be it anticipation, or dumping the load off the shoulder from the daily grind, or what have it. overall, it is a feeling of relief, and it is all good.

I came across this short video about "side effect of cruising". You might find it interesting.

by the way, my bad. That you tube video maybe considered a commercial .... and if that is the case, my post may be "censored". 8-}

My DH always calms me when I worry about forgetting something by saying "well, there's nothing we can't buy again if we really need it or do without."

MissGreen Oct 5th, 2012 07:15 PM

Mine says that justwishin!

On one trip, ex hubbie was entrusted with getting the luggage to the car. I normally check to make sure everything is there so I don't worry. This time I didn't check. At the airport I asked where the black carry on bag was. It wasn't there. He had left it behind. Lucky it didn't hold the passports. He got angry with me when I bought everything new in duty free that was left behind. I said if you checked everything properly, I wouldn't need to buy it all again. I said I was not using a new camera for a trip. I wanted the same camera I was used to, so too bad at the expense!

When my DD was little she used to get a high fever the day before we travelled. In the beginning we gave her antibiotics etc and then when it recurred so many times we called it excitement fever.

I always feverishly check my purse to make sure I have my docs after leaving the driveway!

I feel the same anxiety, especially the night before we travel I can't sleep because I keep wondering if I have everything packed. Sometimes I get up in the middle of the night and add another sweater, etc.

Once at the airport, I feel ready to roll. Flying anymore is really a pain, though.

A long time ago, we were flying to Hawaii with both our little kids. I had packed everything for them and me, and the suitcases were ready to go. We cabbed to the airport, where I discovered that MY one suitcase had been left behind at our house! Yikes. All my clothing, shoes, toiletries, and stuff-- and I sure wasn't going to spend time in Hawaii trying to buy everything. Luckily, our house then was only a 20 minute cab ride and we were early at the airport, so DH went back to the house and got my suitcase. Sheesh. A pretty frantic start to a two-week holiday, but all went well from there.

PS One technique that really helps is that I use a checklist for packing and closing the house. That way I remember to check the stovetop burners, unplug appliances, secure door locks, turn on lights, set alarm system. . .. As well as packing prescription meds, reservation confirmation papers, sweaters, suncreen, etc.
