xaimimgr, you will need to take a shuttle in Boston to get in town because the walk is about 45 mins. The shuttle takes you to Quincy Market and from there, Boston is a walking city. As for Portland, you dock at the pier. No tender needed.

Boston is such a cozy little city. Subway transportation is so easy to figure out (color coded lines)and touring on foot is a breeze. You don't need a map - just ask anyone walking around - Bostonians love to give directions. They might even escort you to your destination if they happen to be going in that general direction. Of course, I'm a former Bostonian so I might be a bit biases :)

No matter what they say...we are friendly.. We like to help tourists or anybody looking lost with a map, because many kindesses over the years over the years in our traveling. My suggestion to her from the cruise port was to take a taxi because of the work done on the Big Dig and get to Quincy Market and take a Trolley Tour a week ahead of time sign up for the Duck Tour which I understand also has a booth in that area..
