Advise for first time cruisers..Princess or HAL?
My parents are getting ready to plan a cruise for themselves, they have never cruised and are very conservative. I have cruised 4 times with carnival, and know they wouldn't like it. From doing a little research it sounds like HAL or Princess would be a good choice. ANy advise on which one, or what boat? I think for their first cruise they will probably go caribbean, but they may choose Alaska. Would appreciate any help you can give on the boats.They don't drink, smoke, or gamble, and like to dance. Thanks

Hi Kate,

Reading your post I would advise Holland America. Princess would have younger passengers. HAL caters to the older dancing passengers.

Any ship would be fine. Just choose the best itinerary.

Paul

Kate;
Paul's right. Your parents will have a better experience. Also, HAL usually has art auctions which are fun to go to.

While both of these are my two favorites, I agree with the previous replies. You say that your parents are conservative. HAL does not try hard to pry more money out of you once you are on board. (does Carnival ring a bell?) Of course if they take optional tours, there is an additional cost. Also HAL has some really nice touches such as the FREE coffee bar with exotic teas and coffees. Others charge extra for this. There is also the no tipping required rule. Personally if they are conservative, I don't think they will care much for the art auctions. (I hate them)At least HAL keeps them in a separate lounge away from the flow. I really like Princess also, but the answer here is easily HAL.

Agree about HAL - we are also seniors (lively) and did the Mediterrean and Turkey on Noordam - going to Baltic on Noordam this June. Great service - quiet elegance -

My parents went on HAL to Alaska (and NCL Mediterranean). They vastly preferred HAL, the service was a lot better (better staff-passenger ratio) and they didn't feel nickel-and-dimed.

You might check into Celebrity, too. They are nice ships with an older, more conservative crowd.

My parents have cruised with just about every line imaginable and have gone on HAL many times. It is their favorite line in that price range. The ships are smaller with a better staff to passenger ratio, are quieter but still entertaining, and for the money I don't think you can find a classier line (I've gone on them as well).

I suspect Kate's parents have already made their decision. The question was posted last November.
