Yacht Rental in the Virgin Islands

Am in the early stages of planning a Virgin Islands vacation. Want to rent a power yacht, bareboat or captain only. Would like any suggestions as to rental companies (who's good, best value, etc), places not to miss (beaches, coves, diving, snorkeling, places to spend the night, etc.) Also, any suggestions for cheapest flights to the islands from the States.

We've only chartered sailing yachts, but we've been there a lot. It's all so wonderful, you just have to go exploring and discover your own special places. We like North Sound in Virgin Gorda. Anchor behind the reef in front of Drake's Anchorage and go in for dinner. (Reservations recommended.) If you want more action, pick up a mooring at the Bitter End Yacht Club. Busy place, lots of fun.

If you are looking for a crewed charter, call Ed Hamilton (800-621-7855) or Lynn Jackney (800-223-2050).

We're interested in the time of year you were there and what the anchorages were like. We haven't been there since the late 70's and are considering a bareboat in July or August. I've heard in the high season some places are like parking lots but its better in the summer. Better can be subjective. any comments would be appreciated.

We have been there 5 times, the first time in August 1980 and the last time in January 1997. Things have changed a lot in 17 years, but it's still a great place to go cruising. Summer is definitely less expensive, and less crowded in some areas, but winter is wonderful, too. The winds are steady and strong, and it's not quite so hot. In fact, you need a blanket at night.

Nevertheless, aside from the threat of hurricanes, summer is a good time to go of you are worried about crowds. But even then, it will very unusual for you to have an anchorage all to yourselves.

E-mail me for more detailed information.
