Which island St.Kitts or Nevis?
Need help deciding whether to stay on St. Kitts or Nevis. My wife and I are going in June for an anniversary celebration. We like to hike, see historic sites and enjoy nice beaches. Hotels suggested to us have included Ottley's plantation, Golden Lemon, Nisbet plantation or Mount Nevis Beach and Hotel. Any one been recently to any of the above?

Kirk, I have been to both St. Kitts and Nevis, although I have never stayed in Nevis, just took the ferry over from St. Kitts. I don't know that I would prefer one over the other. With the ferry running between them, you could stay on one island and visit the other a few times during the week. Both islands are lovely and I am sure you will enjoy them both. Make your decision based on the hotel -- which of the ones you listed seems nicest to you? Go to the web sites of each property so that you can see facilities available, etc.
When are you thinking of going? I am returning to St. Kitts for the fourth time next month and can't wait! Have a wonderful vacation,
Laura

Kirk, no need to thank me -- it's a pleasure to talk about St. Kitts, my favourite island! The three last times I have been to St. Kitts, I have stayed at the same place -- Jack Tar Village. I don't know about you, but I like the convenience of staying at an all-inclusive resort. When I return next month, I will once again stay at Jack Tar, although I have not been there since Allegro Resorts have taken it over. You might have read some posts on this forum stating that Jack Tar is kind of rundown. I have never found it to be that way. However, the resort has been newly renovated following last year's hurricane and will be re-opening on May 1st.
As I've not stayed at other resorts, I can't really comment on any but Jack Tar. However, I have seen the Golden Lemon and can say that it is just lovely. Another fantastic place, if you have the money, is Four Seasons on Nevis. I walked along the beach in Nevis to this hotel and wandered through it - what a gorgeous place! That's where I'll stay when I win the lottery!
I have been to many carribean destinations including Eleuthera, Turks & Caicos, Paradise Island, Cancun, Huatulco and Aruba. St. Kitts is the only place to which I have returned more than once. That should tell you how I feel about this special island.
Please e-mail me if you have any further questions.
Cheers, Laura

Hi, I just thought that I would add my thoughts, too. My husband and I visited St. Kitts last June, and loved it. We stayed at Ottley's and thought it was fabulous. They have rainforest trails that you can hike on, the food is incredible and the place itself is very relaxing. Although it is removed from the beaches and the capitol, a 10-15 minute trip will get you where you want to go. I would suggest renting a car so you can sightsee at your own schedule. If you would like any more info on Ottley's - feel free to contact me directly. One word of advice, be prepared for rain, as short showers or downpours are common in June. But they never last long, and the sun is back out again! We loved it. It is not as touristy as some of the other islands.

Kirk: We've visited St. Kitts twice, and would have gone back 1/99 but did not believe it had recovered from the hurricane. We are planning to go to Jack Tarr in Feb. 2000. We loved our trips. Two pools, two beaches, a casino on property, golf next door, and all the food and drink you can handle. Our accommodations were more than satisfactory, but we did have to be assertive to get a room that we wanted. We had specifically requested a king-sized bed but our request was "lost". Carribbean reservations are not like the States. We found the staff and the other guests to be friendly. (The guests at some other places we have visited have been standoffish.) Visit Turtle Bay if you get a chance - see the green monkeys who, if you're not careful, will steal your beer. We have not hiked the volcano but one of our friends did - I guess it's quite the hike. Take an all day island tour, it's worth it. The beach closest to Jack Tarr is the Atlantic so it is "rougher." There is a shuttle to the Carribbean Beach - you can rent chairs/umbrellas there. If you have any specific questions, let me know. Linda
