Which island is the safest?
We are going to the Caribbean in August. I would like to go to an island that is safe. Which one do you recommend? We are taking two teenagers and would like for them to be able to go around by themselves and not have to worry about their safety.
Which do you recommend?

I recommend St. John, USVI. The two popular beaches, Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay have alot going on for the teenagers e.g. snorkeling, ranger-led hikes, good safe beaches, etc. There is also plenty to do for teenagers at Cruz Bay. I have never felt
unsafe in St. John. There is a police station right in the heart of Cruz Bay. It is a brand new building with modern equipment. I have been to St. John twice in the last seven months and I cannot remember ever hearing a siren of any kind. The local people all seem to know each other and they are sincerely friendly. If safety is a primary concern St. John is a good destination.
I also hear very favorable things about St. Barts,
but I have never been there.

Unfortunately, there IS a Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, AND Hooters on Cozumel. I hate it too, but the cruise ship crowds adore them. I'm never sure why they bother to come to the island when they could stay in the US and see this kind of attraction. Fortunately the clubs are confinded to the one main street. Two or three blocks from there its our old beloved Mexico.

Hooters, Planet Direct, Hard Rock on Cozumel...please stop the carnage of great Caribbean and Mexican cultures. Will they be on every isolated caribbean isle where cruise ships visit? Will we have a common urban sprawl over all the caribbean islands? Thank God my wife and I SCUBA dive and snorkel. At least we can see something unique to a place that let's us know we're visiting different environs, like face-to-face encounters with beautiful coral reefs, sharks, dolphins(wild ones), buttterfly and damselfish, and Queen Angelfish. They won't make an underwater Planet Direct or Hard Rock Cafe....will they?????????????

It's not the Carribean, but the next best thing...Bermuda. It was wonderful!! Clean, safe, and the residents are friendly and not always trying to sell you something! Once you've been to Bermuda, seen the beaches and the water, you may never want to go back to the Carribean!

Safety is a relative thing. My credo is to use common sense. There are things that I would not do here in the city that I live in . I would try to use that same approach in any foreign destination. Checking with the hotel personnel usually gives one a good sense of what to do or not to do. Use common sense and do not get yourself into situations that could leave you vulnerable. same as you would at home !!!!!!!!!!

Lynda, you've probably already booked your trip by now, but I thought I'd offer my two cents, anyway. Honeymooned in Grand Cayman in '94. Wonderful place! I'd say it was pretty safe. Had no problems in that respect. There is really no poverty there. Last year we went to Virgin Gorda in the BVI. Stayed at the Bitter End Yacht Club and were kind of surprised that there are no room keys. Were told that there is virtually no crime there. When we left our room and came back later, everything was as we left it. We could leave our beachbag while we snorkeled and didn't have to worry about anyone touching it. This month we are going to St. John for the first time. I'm told this is a pretty safe place, although I've been warned about possible begging at Cruz Bay. We'll see. Also, I heard a story about someone getting robbed at gunpoint on a secluded beach. I do not think this is the norm, however, and I doubt it was an islander but someone preying on tourists instead. We do not anticipate any problems. Probably any of these places would be great for your kids. Have a great time, wherever you go!

You should try Cuba. There is little or no violence there, beatiful beaches, scenic landscape, very nice and well educated people. If you get ill, there are doctors in the main hotels and you pay next to nothing for the consultation. Theft and begging, unfortunately, is common in the cities, but in the rural areas you can relax. Driving in Cuba is really relaxing. You are almost alone on the main roads. Visit the beatifully restored town of Trinidad in the south with the most beatiful beaches nearby. The south coast is a pearl and not so touristy. Nils

St. Barths is BY FAR the safest! You can walk anywhere at night (and day) and feel safe. It is very different form any of the other caribbean islands. It's all french and french influenced. You see very little, if any, poverty and no poor natives. Caution: it is also VERY expensive -- but absolutley worth it!
