Which island?
Planning honeymoon for October 2012 and I'm completely clueless. I was looking for some inside info about which islands are safe, clean and reasonably priced . Looking for somewhere not too touristy. I would be seeking private accommodations, not interested in the whole all-inclusive thing. As far as activities maybe snorkeling, hiking to see a waterfall, eating some good food, and being a beach bum. We've been to Maui and Oahu. Loved Maui and HATED Oahu because it was the anti-Maui. We stayed at Hilton Hawaiian Village and it was totally overwhelming after spending the previous week at a condo on Maui. Any tips would be greatly appreciated for travel to the Caribbean.

off hand you might look at st. john, usvi or st. lucia. however, without a specific idea of your budget it's almost impossible to make useful suggestions. if this amount includes airfare we need to know where you're flying from. how long you will go for is helpful too as some islands are quite difficult timewise to get to.
by 'private accomodations' i assume you mean hotel room or condo as opposed to villa??

Thanks for all the help!
By private accommodations I just meant I don't want to stay at a huge resort or be waiting 20 minutes to get on a elevator to get to my room. We'll be staying 5-7 days and as for flying out we live near Louisville so we'll have to fly to a bigger airport anyway so it really doesn't matter. As for budget, $6,000 or less (including stay, possibly some activities, transportation to hotel from airport, some or all meals)not including airfare.

take a look at caneel bay resort on st. john. could be perfect for you. has 7 of it's own beaches, great snorkeling, no elevators. hiking in the national park. island has some good dining options. fly to st. thomas - caneel sends a private ferry to bring you to the resort.

As virginia said, Caneel Bay is amazing. Makes Maui look grossly overdeveloped. Caneel has only 171 rooms scattered about 170 acres in the National Park, with wade-in snorkeling from each of the 7 tree shaded white sand beaches. No development to be seen anywhere. Best spots for privacy are upstairs on Hawksnest Beach, or the lower numbers on Scott Beach. See www.caneelbay.com

We were married at Young Island, St Vincent and the Grenadines, about a hundred years ago. Another I would recommend is Spice Island Resort on Grenada; we returned from there in May. It was wonderful. I can't recommend it enough. Another one to consider is LaLuna on Grenada, also wonderful. LaLuna appears on skyauction.com all the time.

As others mentioned...Caneel Bay is wonderful and as a matter of fact...we spent our honeymoon there, also a hundred years ago. They have a sister property called Little Dix which is on Virgin Gorda in the BVI. You can split your trip between the two, but I would only recommend that if you have at least 7 days.

Look at the Royal West Indies in the turks and caicos. Or Ocean Club West. Cheaper than St. John. I have been to 16 caribbean islands and returned to the turks 4 times. Less developed and brilliant blue water.
