We also fly out of GSP, normally to the BVI: Delta through Atlanta, changing planes in San Juan, PR. We are in our villa at Frenchman's Cay on Tortola by about 3 or 4 pm. Maybe that's too late in the day for you, but it allows us time to pick up our rental car, buy groceries for the frig, and take a dip in the pool.
I think it's more about number of legs in your trip than actual flying time. So just look for places you can get to in 2 legs versus 3. Given that you start from GSP, these would be Puerto Rico and the USVI, for sure. (For USVI, American Eagle goes direct from Atlanta, I believe.)
Once you get further east and south than the Virgin Islands, it stands to reason that the number of 2 leg trips is going to seriously decrease.
In the end, I think the best bet is to ask a travel agent what destinations you can fly to direct from ATL.
By the way, if you're looking for an uncrowded, laid-back, crime-free, friendly destination try the BVI.

one of the things that we do is to travel as far as we can to the connecting airport, SJU, for example on a late flight. We overnite it and get an early flight out and can be on our island for breakfast on the first day of vacation! You have to check to see how late that last flight of the day goes out and how early the first flight goes departs. Works great for some connections!!

Take off at 9am and arrive in Marsh Harbor airport in the Abacos, Bahamas via American Eagle or Gulf Stream out of Miami by noon. Then take a ferry over to Great Guana Cay, arriving at the settlement by 2p.m. Then rent golf cart(only vehicles on Guana) and travel over rough, coral and sand road through remote bush country to Great Guana Cay Seaside Village Resort, check in and snorkel in warm waters in the isolated northern part, in the Sea of Abaco by 3p.m. same day.
