which Caribbean Islands don't have a big stray animal problem
I volunteer as an animal rescue person and would like to find a Caribbean Island that does not have a big stray dog and cat problem - so I can go away and relax and not be depressed.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. |
The only island island I have been to thus far where I have not seen strays is Grand Cayman. And I don't recall any/many on St. John either.

Most do not. Give us an idea of which island and the portion of the island country and someone can likely help. For example in Barbados the area of St. James Parish is quite lovely and lush and does not have such a problem as most of the 15-16 I have visited over the years. But I must admit if a problem developed in the past 1-2 years (we have visited 6 and no strays) I might not be aware of it but normally that problem is endemic.

St. Barth. That's a big reason why I go there, pegpaz. I'm so with you on that one.
|
Eleuthera was surprisingly unpopulated with strays. Puerto Rico was one that I remember there were so many and now I contribute to Island Dog to help. Cat Island, Abaco and Great Exuma weren't bad either.
|
I realize that the Bahamas are technically not The Caribbean but I thought I would include my answer anyway.

Barbados does not have a big stray animal problem any more ... not saying it doesn't exist, but well under control. If you see an animal wondering, chances are it got out from it's home.
|
Thank you all for your replies to my question! I will look into your suggestions.
|
Have any of you been to St. John. And if so, do they have a stray problem?
Thanks, Peggy |
The Bahamas have a terrible problem with stray dogs - I just got back from the Exuma islands and couldn't believe how many strays there are. It was really sad to see. I fed so many of them and then after being there a week - wanted to take them all home with me. There was a clinic taking place while I was there - they were spaying & neutering to try to help the problem - but the Bahamians are not very nice to the dogs. They consider them pests - many are abused, poisoned and starving on the streets. I cried every day I was there. The water is beautiful but the dogs are heart breaking to see.

Tobago has a big stray dog issue. It was very upsetting to see.
|
I don't remember there being any in St John. If there was, it wasn't a lot.
|
I don't usually see a huge amount in Aruba. That is not to say there are not any but not as many as other islands. Some of the dogs do belong to people and they have owners. They just do not always have the same leash laws as they do here.

St Maarten had lots of strays in town.

This post is 4 years old, friends.

Oh Gosh!
|
Just because it's old, doesn't mean it isn't still relevant.
|
The topic is relevant but the older posts may or may not reflect the current situation. Things can change in 4 years.
|
That's why current posts are appropriate.

I know I had posted this several years ago, but just wanted to add that we had gone to Turks and Caicos last year and they do have stray dogs, but have a great rescue there. We only saw a few dogs and only 2 cats, who were both ear-tipped (spayed).
