Which Caribbean Island for October?
We have a chance for a vacation the first week of October. Would like to do Caribbean but which island? We have been to BVI, St. John and Grenada but always in the winter. (We enjoyed them all.) We are a 40 something couple no kids. We like casual. We like relaxing. We like local food. And local "atmosphere". We like walking on long beaches. We like smaller hotels or condos but with some service like at least cold drinks close by. Budget is not as much an issue as good value. Flying from Chicago.

St. John is October is great! Granted some restaurants are closed but it's far less crowded than when you went in the winter. Look at Gallows Point or Caneel Bay. This time of year you might get a terrific deal.

Check out the Reef Resort on the east end of Grand Cayman. It seems to match what you are looking for. We love it, but we go in the winter, so I can't comment on what the Caribbean is like in October.

Generally, the islands will be much quieter in October, but the weather is usually starting to cool down from the hot and humid summer. There are great deals to be had all around as it is off season.
You could check out Barbados, Antigua and St Lucia for a change of scenery. You might find some useful information at www.destinationcaribbean.net to help you make a decision. |
We have been to Bermuda and the Bahamas both in October. Both had great weather and less people visiting then.

Remember is still prime Hurricane season. So if you chose any Island that is historically in the known hurricane path to purchase trip insurance that you can cancel for any reason. It will cost more, but is worth it.
The ABC Islands (Aruba, Curacao, and Boniare) are outside of the hurricane belt. Also check out Barbados. |
Pink Sands, Harbour Island Bahamas. Yes, its pink, hotel sits up on a little bluff, a couple cool local places to eat, and the beach consistantly gets rated one of the world's best....its long, very wide, has a great coral reef, and is just beautiful.
We also loved Anse Chastenet in St. Lucia...a hike to get to, but its perched on the side of a hill near the Pitons and just a knockout. Beach is not big and wide, but the snorkeling is fantastic. |
