where to stay Puerto Rico

Thinking of going to PR for a four day getaway because of ease of flights from Connecticut. Have never been to this island. Prefer to be away from hubbub of casinos, etc. Prefer elegant smallish hotels. would like to be near/on beautiful beach. Love to snorkel, and prefer to do it directly from the beach rather than on a snorkeling trip. is there anywhere in PR that would fit this bill. or... something close? I read about what seems to be a lovely hotel (El Convento), but i assume there's no beach nearby.

We found our way to PR for the very same reason...a cheap/direct flight to SJU.

We've fallen in love with Old San Juan. We always spend at least one night there. Our favorite (funky) hotel is The Gallery Inn. It's a destination in/of itself, has an awesome ocean view, and is perfectly situated for touring OSJ.

My friends love El Convento because it too is in the heart of OSJ AND it has a van that takes you to/from a beach.

El Conquistador in Fajardo is a (large, Waldorf owned) resort in Fajardo. It's a great location for snorkeling, visiting El Yunque Rainforest, and kayaking in the bioluminescent bay.

Having said that...our 2 favorite places in PR for relaxing on a gorgeous beach are Rincon and Vieques. The problem is that both are a hike from the San Juan Airport and may entail more travel time than you had in mind for a 4-day trip.

Rincon is an awesome beach town on the west coast of PR about 2-1/2 hours from the airport. It's famous for its world class surfing and you can snorkel from the beach.

Vieques is an island off the south eastern side of PR which you can reach by taking a puddle jumper or ferry. It has tons of secluded beaches.

It is 2 1/2 hours from San Juan aiport but closer to Aguadilla. Jet Blue flies to Aguadilla so if you are interested in Rincon, you may want to at least check that option.

We have always stayed at the larger hotels, but I have read about a hotel called La Concha. It is a Rennassaince brand (marriott) hotel. I think it is supposed to be a boutique hotel, but right by the beach, either on it or across the street. You may want to look into that one. I believe it is located near all the action of the Condado or Isle Verde, so near San Juan.
