Where to stay in Puerto Rico for a few days?

My husband and I are taking a trip to Puerto Rico in July for about 5 nights. Looking for suggestions on area to stay (San Juan, Ponce, etc) and hotels. We want to be on the beach and not in the middle of the city. Nice hotel, nice amenities.
I've heard mix reviews of the Ritz Carlton in San Juan.
Thanks.

If your budget is generous, consider the Horned Dorset Primavera in Rincon. On the beach in a fairly rural area, with luxurious villas with private plunge pools on a beautifully landscaped site. My husband and I pre-celebrated our 20th anniversary here.

Horned Dorset Primavera looks nice, but out of our price range.
Still looking....

Has anyone stayed at Marriott San Juan Resort & Stellaris Casino? If so, how is the beach and pool area? I hear that beach is crowded and not a lot of sun at pool. I'm going in July so hoping not too crowded.

I've stayed at the Marriott, but only for one day. My impression of the beach was that it's not as nice as the beach in Isla Verde (which is where the Ritz Carlton is located). Didn't stay long enough to form an impression of the pool. Overall, it's a comfortable hotel, but the rooms could use a bit of updating.

As for the Ritz (which I didn't address first time around), it's a perfectly lovely hotel -- maybe not up to the standards of other RC properties (like the one in Grand Cayman, for example), but still among the top properties in Puerto Rico, and my first choice when I'm passing through San Juan. (I would like to try El Convento, in Old San Juan, but they usually have a 2-night minimum. Also, for your purposes, it's not on a beach.) But if you're looking to avoid being "in the middle of the city," neither the Marriott, the RC, nor El Convento gives you that.

Don't stay in San Juan of you don't want to be in the middle of the city. That includes both the Condado areas, where the Marriott Stellaris is located and Isla Verde, where the Ritz Carlton is located.
