We stayed several years ago at the Occidental Flamenco in Puerta Platta..did not like P.P., rained, beach not the best. I would highly recomment the Catalonia Bavaro in Punta Cana..BTW we just came back last night from a resort in La Romana, but cannot recommend it right now.

Check out Debbies Dominian Republic website (do a search for it). There are a ton of reports on different resorts. I am sure you can compare all of those that you are interested in by reading the various ratings and reports by visitors.

I don't know if this reply is too late for you Mike. However, My wife and I stayed at the Iberostar Costa Dorada near Puerto Plata in December 2001. The hotel is fantastic and fully merits it's 5 stars for service, accommodation, facilities etc. There was a really good mix of nationalities.

I felt the only down point was the beach which is on the Atlantic and not the Carribean coast. It was clean and safe enough but just not "picture postcard" looking. It is locally regarded as the premier hotel in the Puerto Plata/Playa Dorada area

The hotel is situated approx 5 minutes drive from the main glut of hotels in the Playa Dorada complex where I believe the Occidental Flamenco is. The beaches at the complex hotels are not very good at all and most of the loungers and equipment etc looked filthy although I cannot speak for the Flamenco individually.

Outside there is little to do but as nightlife is not important it should not be a problem. There are a few overpriced (Dominican terms) bars and restaurants in the main PD complex but nothing to shout about.

I agree with Jennifer's comments and check out "Debbies Dominican Travel" website. I have also posted a review of this hotel on a European website named "Realholidayreports.com". Go to reports/caribbean/Dom Rep/IB CD.

Good luck and I hope this reply is not too late for you.
