Help with St. John accomodations

Hi all! We're planning a trip to STJ with our three teens - wondering where to stay?

We typically do self-touring trips (rent a home/villa, car and tour around) - we're not really a resort like family. We love to do things that are a bit off the beaten track (meaning not overrun with tourists), and we love all activities ocean related.

That being said, we like having some things easily accessible. We plan to snorkel, dive and wind surf. Some of us will also do hiking. We're also planning to charter a day trip (I think I read that Palm Tree Charters is great).

So with all that said should we go with VRBO or stay at Maho Bay? Or should we split our time between the two? Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

maho bay? are you camping? I suppose they have some kind of cottages, but they would be, um, "rustic." there are lots of newer condos in cruz bay, you might luck out with vrbo or try the other side of the island, coral bay for more off the beaten path.

I'm planning a trip with one teen for this OCtober to St. John. With three teens (and I'm assuming 2 adults), I think you'll want more space than what Maho would provide. I'd suggest looking at VRBO as a jumping off point for a villa search and then using a place like TripAdvisor or www.traveltalkonline.com to get feedback on the places you're considering. Here at Fodor's is good, of course, but those other forums have more active St. John forums.

Our friends live on St John. This villa is down the street from their home. I have been inside, it is beautiful. Not cheap, but simply stunning views.
