Where to go in February/March
 

Husband and I (mid 50s) would like to go away for a week around the end of February or beginning of March to escape the Michigan winter.

We'd like to stay at a hotel with beautiful beach views and balconies and great pools. But after a couple of days of lounging at the beach/pool we get restless, so we'd also like a place that has historical/cultural sites and museums to visit. We're not into night life or gourmet dining. Right now we're considering Puerto Rico. I'd love comments as to whether that would give us what we're looking for as well as suggestions of other places. Thanks!

Puerto Rico is often overlooked or considered just a brief overnight stopping place for those on the way to other Caribbean Island but those who think that way have a big misconception. The island is steeped in history, old fortresses to explore, has some very nice beaches, plenty of rain forests, terrific hiking and everything from big cities like San Juan to sleepy little fishing villages. Best of all, you can find a variety of full service resorts & hotels, smaller boutique hotels, inns, rental villas and condos, intimate inns, B&B's to fit almost everyone's budget. In short it has everything you are seeking plus much, much more.

Other islands you might want to consider are Nevis, St. Vincent, Grenada and St. Lucia. Also, if you are looking for ecotourism (hiking, nature trails, waterfalls, etc> take a close look at Dominica.

I think Puerto Rico is a great idea (never been but sounds like what you are looking for).

You can also look at the "Mayan Riviera" (the Caribbean coast of Mexico.

Puerto Rico could work. The San Juan National Historic Site certainly is historic. Very interesting place. But try to go when there aren't any cruise ships in port. It can get very crowded then.

There's a couple art museums in Puerto Rico but I didn't go to them.

If you're interested in other outdoor activities, both El Yunque and the biobay (if there's no moon) are fabulous.

There are Mayan ruins along the coast in Mexico and Belize so those might work for you, too.

As I was reading your post and what you were looking for, I immediately thought of Puerto Rico. There is so much to see and so as others have stated above.
