Where to be on the first day of the Year 2000

We're thinking of going to the Caribbean to ring in the new millenium. We'd like to rent some posh house or villa and really do it up with maybe three other couples. Any island suggestions? (We're NOT interested in Jamaica or the Dominican Republic). Thanks in advance.

As a computer programmer I will tell you where I wouldn't want to be at midnight New Year's Eve and at least the next few weeks afterwards:
1. On a plane
2. having surgery
3. or completing any kind of bank transactions.

With this Year 2000 problem plaguing computers we don't know what will work for sure and what won't work. We can try to fix the problem but until the year 2000 actually gets here we won't know for sure. Since computers are greatly involved with planes you couldn't pay me to fly!
After looking into several options for the new year, we figured that the BEST place to be on New Years 1999 is HOME! Everyone and their uncle have booked cruises, Vegas, you name it. It's going to be mob scene out there.

ps...everything we wanted to do was booked solid about 2 years in advance.

St Croix is the easternmost part of the US territory, and a nice place for a generally low-key vacation. There's talk of special ceremonies, parties etc to mark the occasion. We go there often---and can make suggestions for places to stay.

A major US magazine recently listed the 3 top places to be for ringing in the millenium. One of these was the island of Yost Van Dyke which is one of the 20-plus islands of the British Virgin Islands. YVD is a small island a few miles off the northern coast of Tortola, the principal island of the BVI. It's an island with its own particular appeal--no big resorts, not plush at all, very simple, very into those that arrive by boat be they aboard 20 footers or 100 footers. They have hellacious parties there, but also it's a good place to get away from everything. If you rent a boat you can stay at a good resort on Tortola and still be on YVD for the festivities. There's a ferry also. I travel to the BVI regularly and was there a few months ago. People are already starting to prepare for YVD and the Millenium. See you there!

St. John is a great place to rent a beautiful and reasonable villa. Lots of excellent restaurants there, too. An earlier post mentioned the BVI, and that would be a great destination, also. Also, Grand Cayman would be a super place to be, although I don't think villas are in abundance there, like they are on St. John. Whereever you go, have a great time!
