Where stay but NOT dress for dinner
Looking for a great place to stay on St. Lucia but don't want to have to dress for dinner - not even casual dress, slacks, etc. (we do enough of that on other trips). Looking for a place we can wear shorts to dinner.
We were considering Almond Smugglers Cove but I read "no shorts after 6pm". We are looking for a relaxing vacation with watersports and sightseeing during the day -- the most I want to clean up for the PM is a shower and shorts outfit.
Would REALLY like a place that has great snorkeling right off the beach but isn't real remote. We are taking our 24 yr son with us so would like some nightlife - even if it's not a lot.
Does such a place exist on St. Lucia?

I'm probably not the best qualified to offer advice about this, since my only trip to St. Lucia was almost three years ago, and my criteria were somewhat different than yours, but here are a few thoughts anyway.
I would recommend that you consider spending at least part of your trip in a non-AI resort in Rodney Bay. This would give you several things you are seeking: 1) casual attire restuarant options for dinner, 2) proximity to nightlife for your son, 3) not remote.
A lot of people think the better snorkeling spots are located in the south, but this area tends to be a lot more remote, and many of the resorts are isolated so you have very few convenient options for dining outside the resort and no nightlife. I also think in general resorts tend to be dressier environments. I stayed at the BodyHoliday at LeSport (north part of the island) for part of my trip, and they did have one very casual (i.e., shorts) dining option (a "grill" where you could get simple dinners) but the nicer restaurants did have a dress code (no shorts). LeSport had some snorkeling on a nearby reef, but I didn't try it.
The other place I stayed was the Coco Palm in Rodney Bay. I didn't eat dinner at their restaurant, but it is a casual pool side restaurant, and I'm fairly sure that nice shorts would be fine there. There also are a lot of restaurants (everything from fast food to beach bar type restaurants to fine dining) and bars in that area. The downside of this area is that I don't think there is much snorkeling right there, but it is the most convenient area for taking tours/daytrips to other places, and if you tend to be more independent, you can take buses from there. Personally, I wouldn't want to drive on St. Lucia because the roads are narrow and twist through mountains, and they drive on the left.
Hope this helps or at least bumps up your post so someone else sees it and responds with more info.

I was just in St. Lucia in late Sept. (my 4th trip) so obviously I love the island. I did not stay at either of the two resorts I can recommend but I was at them for dinner/lunch.
I recoommend Rex St. Lucian (moderate all-inclusive) very informal right on Rodney Bay Beach. I met the general manager there Mark (a great fun guy) or Coco Palm or Coco Kreal (both in Rodney Bay Village) within walking distance of the beach, grocery stores, shops and restaurants. Both are budget properties and very clean and with staffs and both very informal

We r going in December....but to the south, supposedly where the best snorkeling is. We r at Stonefield Estate Villas, where u can dress casually for dinner. Why not split your time between the north & the south...?
