We happened to go for vacation to Turks and caicos Island in May 2006 and stayed at Turks and Caicos club on Grace bay beach. It was almost end of tourist season, but it was perfect weather with Temp 80- 85 and the hotel is onthe beach and next to the reef. We snorkelled everyday around the buoys placed to protect the reef. Seen as many fish as we have seen scuba diving at that reef. Coral Gardens is the hotel next to Turks and Caicos club and absolutely next to reef. It was beautifull. Lot of turtles, parrot fish and seen to nurse sharks with in 30 feet from the shore. Its an expensive place. Best thing to do is hit the super store called AIG and get all necessary stuff like wine, luncheon meet, fruit and drinks. The rooms are big and fully furnished with a great kitchen where we stayed.Best place for shore diving and snorkelling from beach . grace bay beach is ranked one of the best in the world. There is nice upscale Hotel Palms few blocks north with endless poll and bar and restaurant.. Divng is great too.

In my opinion, in the area of North and Central America the best 4 are St. John within 10 miles of Caneel, Belize around the Blue Hole (though a divers destination, the snorkeling around the hole is as good or better than St. John and Tobago Caye and a few atolls near there (but to go there just for a day at Tobago Caye-in Grenadines, not the island of Tobago is not worth it and also Roatan, Honduras staying at Anthony's Key Resort-they go out twice a day for 2 hours and in 5 days you will not go to the same place twice if the Captain knows where you have gone. Further away from home, the Great Barrier Reef off Lizard Island or Hayman Island, or Simillan Islands off Phuket or the Redang and Prehentian Islands in Mayalsia are the best of the best.

Not a Caribbean destination, but if you are developing a "must snorkel" list, it has to include the lagoon surrounding Bora Bora. Incredible! The entire lagoon is like a gigantic aquarium with an amazing collection of sea creatures, great and small. The water is crystal clear, and because it is inside the fringing reef, it is always very calm. Any of the resorts on the island are great to snorkel from, and it is a special treat to go right off the deck of your over-the-water bungalow. Even my wife, who is far from a passionate snorkeler, was in the water every day we were there.

Hands down - Cayman Brac had THE most spectacular snorkeling. Close second was a deserted beach off of Grand Turk (but that was almost 15 years ago!). Cayman Brac is completely a diver's paradise - my husband is a diver - I am not. The places to stay there are on the windward side of the island - we drove to the opposite side where you can wade into the water and snorkel. SPEC-tacular animals and pristine corals. We saw huge spotted eagle rays, turtles, barracuda, school after school of all the regular reef fish, a nurse shark, sting rays, and if you wanted to swim further out, there was a ship wreck to see! It was quite memorable!
