Where is this Caribbean setting that I try to describe?

Where is this Caribbean setting that I try to describe? My families (Dad and 3 women)base camp/accommodations are in a village, surrounded by rainforest and noisy critters. The streets are dirt and you swear you will not survive such wanting conditions. But in truth everything required is handy and the city/major town is not far away. This could be a genuine situation or one carefully created by the accommodation provider. Thank you.

Try St. John, camping in the national park.

You'll find places like that in Costa Rica and perhaps Belize.

The most well know is, as J62 said is on St. John in the USVI's.

I'm going to spell this wrong but it's an island off the coast of the Yucatan? Isla de Mujures (sp?) Come on folks, help me here. It's supposed to be just like you describe except for the rainforest thing.

Isla Mujeres, yup -- but no rainforest.
Bay islands/Roatan qualify but no nearby town. Would match your fantasy
to Bocas del Toro, Panama on every count.

Ditto, tiverton house. Panama nails it!
