Long Bay is quite a lovely resort, although it's quite far from Road Town and a cab ride to West End. There are some restaurants and nightspots not too far away at Apple Bay. The beach is terrific. You might consider staying at Cane Garden Bay, on the north side of the island. It's kind of a funky little town with a beautiful beach, several small and reasonable hotels and inns, restaurants, and nightspots with island music ‹ all within walking distance of each other. You'll probably want to rent a car or Jeep for part of your stay no matter where you stay. Public transportation is by taxi, and it can get expensive.

We have been to the BVI's 7 times and Honeymooned there. We usually stay on Peter Island which is just off Tortola. They have their own Ferry which leaves tortola every hour. The beach is super private and the food is excellent. The rates until 12/20/97 is about $300/ night.
Peter Island has their own dive boat and is perfect if you are divers. Good Luck

I've been to the BVIs many times. I also recommend Cane Garden Bay - a 1 mile beach with lots of little beach bars and restaurants - you can walk any time night or day. There is a villa right on the beach at one end called the Cane Garden "On the Beach" House owned by Jane Clark in New York - 212-777-9127. Rhymer's Hotel is not great, but it is cheap. You really need to rent a jeep to get around. The BVIs are my idea of heaven.

With regard to Tortola, I think you have received some good answers. If you want suggestions similar to Peter Island there are a lot of options that can be considered in BVI at other islands that would be more interesting for you. I think you have a problem in looking both for comfort and interesting places to walk to in the evening. There is not that much night life on Tortola and most of that is centered in Road Town. Most likely the place that fits you the best on Tortola is Long Bay Hotel. Also, there can be some snorkeling off of the rocks there. Other beaches are often too sandy for good snorkeling. The other side of the island is remote and the facilities can be modest, however as indicated there are things arround there and it can be fun. It is nice to have a car as it is interesting to go around the island. Get the least expensive one and jeeps offer no real advantage other than a hard ride. As in most places, you may not be covered for anything if you go off the paved roads. If you want places with a lot of activity in the area consider the Bitter End Yacht Club or Cooper Island. Due to the boating activity, there is a lot of people coming and going and a lot of partying if you feel so inclinded.

We stayed at Long Beach last December. It's on the north side of the island, where all the beaches are, and it is beautiful, although distant from Roadtown (well, the island is only a mile wide, but it's over the hill). You can walk to Sebastian's where there's entertainment, and Bomba's Shack (home of the famous full moon party, which we missed). The island is pretty calm at night since the sailboaters pretty much retire to their boats fairly early. During the day there's more to do, and there are lots of restaurants. Go to the North Shore Shell Museum and Restaurant and Mrs. Scatliffe's for local cuisine. Don't be surprised if you're the only patrons. If you do stay at Long Bay, go for the hillside, not oceanfront. We had a one bedroom apartment with fully equipped kitchen -- huge! We met a couple who were in a small "oceanfront" where the view is entirely obstructed by shrubs, and the noise of the surf quite disturbed their sleep. I'd recommend having a car to explore. It's beautiful and has great diving if you SCUBA dive.

We also stayed at Long Bay, in December 95, and enjoyed it very much. Contrary to the previous reply, however, I would recommend the older oceanfront units (not the newer and better decorated ones, which we switched out of because there was no direct beach access). They are elevated on pilings and overlook the very nice beach through the palm trees. I for one love to go to sleep listening to the surf, and it is great to be a few steps away from a morning swim or an evening stroll. I agree that a car (preferrably 4-wheel drive) is needed if you are to enjoy the island. Go all the way to the other side - actually Beef Island where the airport is - and there's a marvelous deserted beach on the north side.
