When is hurricane season in St.John?
 

I have decided that St. John is really the perfect place for me to go on my honeymoon. Should I take the risk in going during hurricane season or should I avoid it altogether? I was originally thinking of honeymooning the 2nd week in July, but I was told that many people "shut-down" their sailing operations etc. on the islands during hurricane season. SO if the locals "shut things down" so to speak would I really miss out on too many activities or do locals still do business as usual during hurricane season?

WOuld I be better off honeymooning mid-June?

My wedding is in June, but I didn't want to go on my honeymoon right away since I know I will be doing lots of last-minute packing so that's why I wanted to go in July if I am making any sense at all!!!

Hurricane season is From June 1st to November 30th. The peak is September 15th. It's highly unlikely to have a hurricane hit when you are on your honeymoon. They is nothing that I know of that closes that early in the summer. It should be business as usual!

If you are really worried about a hurricane, consider the islands out of the hurricane belt.(Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) or ones that rarely get hit(Grenada, Barbados).

My husband and I were unlucky enough to have a hurricane hit St. John during our honeymoon in August of 2000. We didn't find out until we got to St. John that Hurricane Debbie was headed for us. We had to leave the island, fly back home, and then three days later fly back to St. John (there was no damage). We ended up having a wonderful honeymoon with beautiful weather. I'm not trying to scare you, but the risk is there. If you think St. John is perfect for you, then I wouldn't avoid it because of hurricane season. I think you would be safer going in July than going in late August like we did. Despite the hurricane, I wouldn't change my honeymoon one bit. St. John was absolutely perfect. None of the restaurants where we wanted to go were shut down, so we had no problems as far as that was concerned. We went back to St. John in September of 2002 and had no hurricane problems and no problems with things being shut down.

Hurricane Debbie did not hit St. John. They were being cautious and sent you home. This is where trip insurance comes in. Glad you came back and had a great time!

We did have trip insurance that we bought through our travel agent. When we called to tell our travel agent that a hurricane was coming, she did everything she could to get us back on the last two airline seats to the U.S. Then, once the hurricane passed, she re-booked us at Caneel Bay. She also called the company through which we had our trip insurance. They said because we used our plane tickets to get to St. John and then back to the U.S., there was nothing they could do and we would not be reimursed for our tickets. We were told that the insurance would only have applied if we had never got on the plane to go to St. John in the first place. We got back to St. John a few days later by using my father-in-law's frequent flier miles since we couldn't afford to buy new tickets ourselves. Caneel Bay was nice enough to give us an extra night free since our first night there (prior to the hurricane) was spent preparing to go home. We were pleased with the way Caneel Bay handled this, but we were very disappointed in the travel insurance. Maybe we just used a bad company or had a bad policy?
