What to shop for in Nassau???

Hi. Going to Nassau in April for a day off of a cruise. Want to shop and tour Atlantis, have a nice lunch somewhere.

What are some local items or bargains good to look for? Jewelry? Linens maybe? Haven't been there in a while. Went once and actually wasn't all that impressed with shopping of eating. Maybe we just didn't know what to look for...

Hand made crafts, baskets are pretty good. Not a lot to write home about I'm afraid. Just want to make sure you are aware you must pay admission to tour the Atlantis. It is a pretty hefty charge, around $27 (can someone help me on this?) per person. You can go into the casino of course free of charge. But, to go out to see the aquariums, etc they are charging everyone. For lunch best to pick a local dive that serves the traditional conch fritters and rice 'n peas, etc. "NIce" restaurants are way overpriced in my book.

The wood carvers, most of them, at the straw markets are quite skilled. They produce beautiful carvings. I bought a large, and heavy, wood sculpture of an Angel Fish, and took photos of the man carving it, from a large block of wood to the finish. We have it sitting on a table in our family room with "action" pictures around it being carved and with my wife and I posing with the artist. A neat discussion corner of our family room. It was big and heavy, but my suitcase managed it. Robert

Has anyone been on the tour? Is it something worth seeing? Or a rip off?

For the price of the tour I considered getting a room for the day so my kids could use the pool. I had two children with me and entrance for four is hefty. I did make it onto the grounds once by invitation from someone in the resort. It is a beautiful place, but not worth the price in my opinion. My favorite thing to do on this island is go to Cabbage beach on Paradise island just a little down from the Atlantis. This is a public beach and not usually crowded.

Heavens, I would compare the tour to something you can see free at the largest resorts in Las Vegas.

We just got back from Nassau and I'm sorry to say that it's not my favorite shopping destination. The beaches are beautiful and the snorkeling is great, but Nassau can't even begin to compare to places like Cozumel when it comes to shopping. We weren't impressed with the Straw Market and there are duty free shops, but they're not that great.

You'll like the 100% duty free shops, but there are limitations on the quantities you purchase. There are duty free stores on Paradise Island, but more on Bay Street in Nassau. China and crystal, clocks of all sorts, jewellery, leather items, and as you listed- perfume, cologne and toilet water. There are cameras and all types of high-quality photo equipment, swearters, cardigans, and so on, that are great deals. You'll find items up to 40% less than in the states. Visit Little Switzerland on Bay Street in Nassau, and do not forget to browse at Treasure Traders on Bay Street across from the Straw Market. they have fine china, crystal and other fine gifts at 32-50% off. They are the largest outlet, I believe, in the Caribbean, and have been in business for a half century..they have it together. The Columbian has fine jewelry and excellent selection of emeralds. There's a great FENDI shop in downtown Nassau at the corner of Bay St. and Charlotte St. Crown Jewelers is nice for precious stones and gold jewelry and watches on Bay St. in Nassau and on Paradise Island in the PI Shopping Plaza. I always like to go through the Discount Warehouse for gold chains, precious stones, bracelets, and designer and fashion watches on Bay Street in downtown Nassau, across from the Straw Market. There's also a GUCCI store in downtown Nassau on Saffrey Square on the corner of Bank Lane and Bay Street. Hope this helps. Have fun. Robert
